Fault Tracing, Data Link Signals

Data link malfunctions may have their source in sensors, switches or wiring from an electronic control unit (ECU). The
instrument cluster’s diagnostic display features may aid in finding these faults. For more information on data link wiring,
refer to “Data Links, Design and Function” in group 371 or to the scan tool.

Fault Tracing, Hard-wired Components

Hard–wired inputs to the instrument cluster include sensors, switches or outputs from various ECUs. The instrument
cluster’s diagnostic display features may aid in finding these faults. For more information , refer to ”Instrument Cluster
Control Module (MID 140) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC), Guide” in group 38 or to the scan tool.

Gauges
Fault Tracing
The checks below are grouped by gauge. Make sure to consider observed symptoms or
fault codes when checking gauges. For pin-outs , see “Connector Pinouts”, page 8 . For
complete circuit information refer to the electrical schematics on the dealer’s portal.

Fault Tracing
The checks below are for fault tracing the instrument cluster display. Make sure to consider
observed symptoms or fault codes when checking the display.

Note 1: If the instrument cluster overheats, it will go offline,

or power will be shut off to the display. No fault will be given
for this condition.

Speaker
Fault Tracing
The checks below are for fault tracing the speaker integrated in the rear of the instrument
cluster. Make sure to consider observed symptoms or fault codes when checking the
speaker.

Tests
Instrument Cluster Self Tests
The following 4 tests can be carried out via the display using
the controls on the stalk switch. The tests are available
under the display menu “System diagnostics.” For further
information, refer to the manufacturer’s scan tool.

Gauge Test
This test checks that the gauge pointers are working.

Indicator Lamp Test

This test activates all warning lamps and indicator lamps. In
addition, the warning lamps in the gauges are turned on. If
the lamps do not light up during the test, the cluster lamp
test feature is not working or a signal wire to the cluster is
faulty.

Display Test
This test checks that all pixels can be activated and
deactivated.

Speaker Test
This test checks whether the speaker is working.

Tests with VCADS

Instrument Cluster, Test
With VCADS Pro, you can perform instrument cluster tests.
The tests are similar to the self test in the instrument cluster.
In addition, the status for the switches on the stalk lever
can be checked.

Lamp Switch, Test

This test allows the technician to determine if the signals
from the Light Control Panel (LCP) are being received by
the Lighting Control Module (LCM). If the signals are being
read by the test, the fault is not in the instrument cluster,
but may be in the LCM. Check for a faulty LCM output or
faulty wiring.

Gauge Checks, Instrument Cluster

This test shows those sensor values that are sent via data
link to the gauges and display. It also shows the sensor
values for hard-wired sensors. The signal values can be
compared with the display on each gauge.
