Computer Lab Rules and regulations

COMPUTER LAB RULES 


1. All Computer facilities are only to be used for college work. Students are not to be in a computer room without a
teacher's permission.

2. Enter the room quietly. Be prepared for class. Bring your agenda and a pen or pencil to your seat. Also bring any
homework or assignments you need for your class.

3. Do not logon as anyone but yourself. Remember your password and keep it secure.

4. Do NOT eat or drink in the computer room. Do NOT chew gum.

5. Wait for teacher’s permission to use the equipment. You must follow the instructions given for all activities. Keep
hands off the equipment anytime the teacher is speaking to the class.

6. You are responsible for the computer you are using, so please check equipment at start of lesson and notify
teacher if necessary. Do not unplug or change equipment. NO vandalizing computers in anyway: this includes
keyboard, mice, computer, and desktop.

7. Treat the equipment carefully and respectfully. You do not have permission to take apart any equipment. Keep
your hands OFF of other people’s computers.

8. 8. Cooperate when using the printers. Try not to waste printing paper. Show on screen the teacher your work for
approval before printing it out.

9. Be considerate and talk softly. Let others think. Be respectful of all teachers and students who may be using the
room. Be courteous and helpful to fellow students, teachers and computer technicians at all times.

10. Raise your hand when you need help. Don't wait till you lose your work (save often to the folder provided on the
network) or the computer shuts down on you before you alert someone of a problem. Be patient and think about your
problem or questions while waiting. Do not move or adjust equipment without permission.

11. The Internet is used for school-related work ONLY. When using the Internet your usage is monitored, anyone
accessing undesirable sites will have Internet privileges removed and will be formally disciplined. Surfing through
Web sites that are ethically wrong, and sending e-mails that are ethically wrong, is strictly prohibited.

12. Clean up the area around your computer, and keep all surfaces neat and clean at all times. Throw away any trash
in the bin provided in the room.

13. No disks/CDs are to be brought in or taken out of the room without teacher’s permission. You may not insert a
disk in the computer until it has first been scanned for viruses.

14. Only college software is to be used, no software of any kind is to be brought into the classrooms. Software must
not be downloaded from the Internet.

15. No playing games unless they are part of the course work. Watching films, and listening to music are not allowed.

16. Take all your belongings with you when leaving the computer room. Hand in your folder and any assigned work.
17. Plan to clean up at least 5 minutes before the bell. Log out of the network and TURN THE COMPUTER OFF.

POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES FOR BREAKING RULES 


o Meeting with headmaster, and/or Parent conference.

o If a student is caught vandalizing equipment in anyway: consequences will include paying for repairs, cleanup,
possible failure and removal from course.

o Lowered grades: part of class is learning how to use computers correctly.

o Loss of computer privileges.

o Anyone found saving software to disk without authorization will be asked to leave.

o Withdrawal from computer access which may result in non-completion of a course or project.

o Cleaning the computer room from top to bottom!

Below are suggestion of rules and regulations for computer lab users.

1. Pupils are prohibited to enter the lab unless authorised by the teacher.

2. Scan diskettes before using them.

3. Report all problems related to the system to the teacher.

4. Do not attempt to repair or tamper with lab equipment.

5. Be responsible when using equipment, software and facilities in the lab.

6. Do not move any equipment from its original position.

7. Do not remove or load any software into the computer.

8. Do not change the settings in the computer.

9. Save all work in external storage device and not in the computer.

10. Do not bring in bags, food and drink into the lab.

11. Turn off the computer accordingly after use.

12. Switch off all power supplies before leaving the lab.

13. Internet facility is strictly for educational purposes only.

14. Teachers should record the use of computer lab in the lab log book.

15. All users should record the use of computers in the computer log book.
16. The Lab should be kept clean and tidy at all times.
Use Guidelines for Computer Lab

1. DO NOT install any software in the lab without the consent and permission of the
ICT department. We believe we have installed the necessary software to suit your
general purpose. Should you need extra and specialized software for a particular
need, you are welcome to discuss with us. We are a strong advocate of legal and
licensed software. We DO NOT  encourage pirated software;
 
2. DO NOT alter any setting and configuration of computers in the lab;
 
3. Virus software is installed on all computers in the lab. Our antivirus software
is McAfee Enterprise 8.5.0i. It is enabled and configured to automatically
scan flash drives when accessed. It is also configured to do a full scan of the hard
drives at scheduled intervals. DO NOT interfere with this scanning routine. While
scan is in progress it may cause minor delay in and processing speed of your
computer. However the inconvenience far outweighs the damage and threat
caused by virus infection;
 
4. Users are solely responsible for the backup of their important and sensitive data
either by saving it locally on hard drives or to portable USB drives. ICT
department WILL NOT be liable for any data loss caused by computer breakdown
or by the routine initialization of hard drives;
 
5.  NO bags are allowed in the lab;
 
6.  Printing is FREE but student are to supply their own papers;

 Printing Guidelines for Computer Lab

Printing is very expensive and it is one of the ongoing expenses. Therefore, the


following policy has been put into practice concerning how much and what kinds
of printing are acceptable.

i.  The user must be logged in to the network in order to print. 


 
ii. DO NOT print non academic related materials
 
iii. We have duplex printers; double-sided printing is default. 
 
iv. If you need more than one copy of a document, print one original and make
photocopies as needed. It is not appropriate to print multiple copies
unless theparticular file type requires it, and in this case multiple print copies
should be kept to a minimum.
 
v. We strongly discourage printing of PowerPoint slides; especially when printing
color slides in black & white printer
 
vi. Color Printing & Scanning is NOT provided by the ICT Department.
 
vii.  Inform the Help Desk if the printer is faulty. DO NOT try and repair it yourself

7. Inform our Help Desk immediately if a computer is not working properly. DO


NOT try to repair the equipment yourself. Our Help Desk is reachable by calling
extension 2010 from telephone provided in the printing area;

 
8. Lab computers are strictly for academic purpose only. Therefore you are
encouraged to use them to maximize your learning capacity. In particular
accessing and browsing of pornographic sites are strictly NOT allowed. In
addition the following website and activities are deemed inappropriate:

 Music Download
 
 Chat Boards
 
 Gaming
 
 Excessive social networking

9. NO Food or Drinks allowed in the lab;


 
10. NO loud ringtones;
 
11. Always shut down the computer in the proper manner when leaving the lab:

 Click the Start button
 
 Select Shutdown from the menu

12. Use of the lab is restricted to the current students, faculty, and staff only. DO
NOT bring guests or visitors into the lab;
 
13. Keep your computer lab clean! Please dispose of your own trash and pack out any
items you brought with you. Return your keyboard, mouse to their normal
position and push in your chair when leaving the lab;
 
14. The user is responsible for observing all copyright and licensing laws;
 
15. DO NOT lock any workstations if you know you will be gone for a while (more
than 15 minutes). If we see any locked workstations, we will unlock it
immediately without further notification, and all unsaved works will be lost;
 
16. NO group discussions allowed in the lab;
 
17. NO personal computers or other IT equipments are allowed into the lab;
 
18. Always carry your campus ID card with you while using the lab. You may be
asked to present it at any time, and if you don’t have it with you, you may be
asked to leave the lab;
 
19. Users are responsible for their own personal belongings. ICT is not responsible
for lost or stolen items;
 
20. You may switch off mobile phones while in the lab. Alternatively use low
ringtones or vibrator mode only;
 
21. Be courteous, be polite,  and show respect to other students and staff; 
 
22. Be considerate. Avoid using computers unnecessarily longer than required. Other
students may be waiting in the queue.

Violation and Penalties

Should any of the above provision be breached, the ICT department depending on the
degree of violation will either warn or disable the account of the student. Academic
Office will be informed immediately for their record. The account will remain disabled
until the student can show and prove genuine reasons NOT to re-offend.
