NCERT QUESTIONS

Q.1 ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS-

(i) Why do the plates move?

Ans The plates move because of the
movement of the molten magma
inside the earth.

(ii) What are exogenic and endogenic

forces?
Ans(a) Exogenic forces-The forces that work
on the surface of the earth are called
as exogenic forces.
(b) Endogenic forces-The forces that act
in the interior of the earth are called
are called as endogenic forces.

(iii) What is erosion?

Ans Erosion is the wearing away of the
landscape by different agents like
water,wind,ice etc.

(iv) How are flood plains formed?

Ans During floods layer of fine soil and
other material called
sediments are deposited on the
river bank.This deposition leads to
the formation of a flat fertile flood
plains.

(v) What are sand dunes?

Ans Sand dunes are low hill like structure
formed by the deposition of
sand in the desert.
(vi) How are beaches formed?
Ans Beaches are formed when the sea
waves deposit sediments along the
shores of the sea.

(vii) What are ox-bow lakes?

Ans When the meander loop is cut off
from the main river it forms a cut off
lake.As its shape is like an ox-bow it
is known as ox-bow lake.

Q.2 TICK THE CORRECT ANSWER(TO BE

DONE IN THE BOOK ONLY)
(i) (a)Cliff
(ii) (b) Moraine
(iii) (c) Volcano
(iv) (d) Desert
(v) (e)River valley

Q.3 MATCH THE FOLLOWING

(TO BE DONE IN THE BOOK ONLY)
(i) Glaciers River of ice
(ii) Meanders Hard bed rock
(iii) Beach Sea shores
(iv) Sanduned Desert
(v) Waterfall Rivers
(vi) Earthquake Viberations of
earth

Q.4 GIVE REASONS

(i) Some rocks have the shape of a
mushroom.
Ans Reasons-In desert,wind erodes the
lower section of the rocks more than
the upper section which makes the
base of the rock narrow and the
upper part wide giving it the shape
of mushroom.

(ii) Flood plains are very fertile.

Ans Reasons-Flood plains are formed by
the deposition of fine fertile soil and
other material called sediments on
the river bank.As the soil and
sediments are brought by flood
water therefore they are very
fertile.

(iii) Sea caves are turned into stacks.

Ans Reasons-When the cavities in the sea
caves become bigger and bigger only
the roof of the caves are leftover,
which forms sea arches.Further due
erosion the roof breaks and only
walls are left, turning the sea caves
into stacks.

(iv) Building collapse due to earthquake.

Ans Reasons-When the lithospheric plates
move, the surface of the earth vibrates
and then these vibrations travel
outwards from the epicentre in the
form of waves which leads to sudden
movement and result in the collapse
of building.
ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS-

Q.1 What do you know about lithospheric

plates?
Ans The earth’s crust consists of several
large and small rigid and irregularly
shaped plates called lithospheric
plates.

Q.2 What is a volcano?

Ans A volcano is a vent(opening)in the
earth’s crust through which molten
material comes out suddenly.

Q.3 Explain the following terms

(a) Focus
(b) Epicentre
Ans(a) Focus-The place in the crust where
the movement starts is called the
Focus.
(b) Epicentre-The place on the surface
above the focus is called Epicentre.

Q.4 Name the three types of earthquake

waves.
Ans Do it yourself.

Q.5 What is seismograph?

Ans Do it yourself.

Q.6 When did earthquake occur in Bhuj

(Gujarat)?
Ans Do it yourself.

Q.7 Name the scale on which the

magnitude of the earthquake is
measured.
Ans Richter scale

Q.8 What is delta?

Ans A triangular shaped island formed
at the mouth of the river by
deposition of sediments is called a
delta.

Q.9 Name the highest waterfall of the

world.
Ans Do it yourself.

Q.10 Where is Victoria Falls located?

Ans Do it yourself.
Q.11 Name few rivers of the world that
form a delta.
Ans Do it yourself.

Q.12 Name some coastal landforms.

Ans Sea arches,sea caves,stacks,beaches,
lagoons,sea cliffs etc.

ACTIVITY
Q.1 Classify the following under
appropriate column-:
Meander,levees,glacial moraines
flood plains,sand dunes,sea cliff,
beach oxbow lake,mushroom rocks,
waterfall,sea arches.

Q.2 Observe the photographs given on

(pg 18 of the textbook).Identity them
and also tell whether they are
erosional or depositional landforms.
