GUIDELINES AND

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

GENERAL CONTEST GUIDELINES
1. The contests are open to all Senior High School students who are duly registered and
bona fide members of the competing organization they are representing and of Saint Paul
School of Professional Studies.
2. The event shall be composed of
● Three (3) interconnected, collaborative contests namely:
a. Flash Fiction Writing
b. Comic strip Making
c. Digital Poster Making (w/ short text teaser)
● Two (2) individually separated contests namely:
a. Slam Poetry
b. Daily Trivia
3. Each competing organization shall provide a maximum number of ten (10) participants
will represent the house as one (1) team, and shall be assigned with the following roles of
(but are not limited to):
a. Flash Fiction Writers (3)
b. Cartoonists (4)
c. Digital Artists (3)
4. The competing organizations must submit a list of their participants with the following
format: FULL NAME/ASSIGNED ROLE/CONTACT NUMBER on or before 10:00AM
July 28, 2020 to the Academics Committee.
5. All participants must prepare the following:
a. Stable Internet Connection (must have backup internet provider i.e. smart and/or
globe)
b. Gadget that can access Zoom (w/ account and functioning audio & camera)
c. Room with fair lighting
d. Software applications needed for the contests (not limited to):
i. Flash Fiction and Feature Article
o Microsoft Word
o Google Docs
o WPS Office
ii. Comic Strip
o Adobe Photoshop

6. All ten (10) participants shall be present for the contests to officially start and at least
eight (8) participants shall always be present during the time period of the three (3)
official Zoom meeting sessions.

7. The schedule for the three (3) Official Zoom meetings is as follows:
a. July 29 8:00 AM -11:00 AM: Flash Fiction writing
b. July 29 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM: Comic Strip Making
c. July 30 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM: Digital Poster Making (w/ short text teaser)

8. The contest shall start and end with the Officer-in-charge for the Teams’ Zoom Session.
The participants should also begin and end making their entries with the supervision and
approval of the officer-in-charge for each Zoom session.

9. The participant assigned for the specific contest should enable their camera, microphone,
and Screen Share feature if the contest requires them to do so. The remaining participants
must always have their camera and microphones enabled.

10. The teams can collaborate and plan before the contest session provided that no advance
works should be made and reflected on their screens. Penalties will apply for suspicious
activities such as copy and pasting files, opening pre-made files related to the output, etc.

11. A participant from the same team may help on working on the outputs for the other
contests, provided that the participant who will assist shall be asked to turn on their
Screen Share feature (e.g. cartoonist assists making illustrations for digital poster).

12. All contents and outputs made shall be original. Browsing for ideas are allowed provided
that all entries shall be subject to plagiarism and copyright infringement.

13. The whole Zoom session shall be recorded by the officer-in-charge and shall be reviewed
by the Academics Committee.

FLASH FICTION WRITING

Rationale:
Flash fiction is a favored genre among the English-speaking world’s most celebrated
writers for its ability to convey deep truths and universal human emotions in just a few short
paragraphs. Through flash fiction writing, students can convey deep truths through their own
interpretations of the theme, and their pieces can resonate with readers from all walks of life.

Guidelines and Mechanics:


1. An originally composed Flash Fiction piece shall be accomplished by the team, headed
by the flash fiction writers. The theme from which they will base their story will be given
during the First Official Zoom session when all participants of the competing teams are
present.

2. The contest shall start with the participants of each competing team, and the
officer-in-charge at Zoom, through simultaneous meetings in separated meeting rooms
for each competing team. The story writers should turn their Screen Share feature on,
while the other participants should have their microphones and cameras on.

3. Headed by the Flash Fiction writers, the team shall then collaborate on composing an
original Flash Fiction piece following these specifications:
a. Written in English (Filipino words are accepted but should only be limited to
necessary terms needed for the story/plot)
b. Maximum of 1000 words, minimum 750
i. Title: (Sans Serif), 12, center
ii. Body: (Sans Serif), 12, double spacing, justified

c. Save the file as a Microsoft Word document – .doc or .docx. We also accept file
types .rtf, .pdf, .txt.
d. The file name should be the Organization: (title of the story) only, typed the same
as on the document, for example: HYDRA: A Christmas Carol

4. The teams will be given exactly three (3) hours to compose a Flash Fiction piece. If the
participants finish ahead of time, they may pass their entries and leave the meeting room.

5. The official entries must be submitted to ​20192042@spsps.edu.ph with the mail subject
e.g. “HOUSE OF HYDRA: Flash Fiction Entry.” After submission, the entries are no
longer available for editing and shall be considered as the teams’ official entry for Flash
Fiction Writing.

6. Participants will be judged based on the following criteria:


● Use of the theme 35%
o Originality and creativity in interpretation and incorporation of the theme
is demonstrated.
● Plot and Story 30%
o The plot is plausible and complete within the limits of the words allowed.
The story is original and compelling. The story arc is logical and
powerful.
● Emotional Impact 15%
o The story evokes emotion and allows for suspension of disbelief.
● Use of Language 15 %
o Proper grammar is employed, strong quality of writing is demonstrated,
language is mined for maximum expression, use of slang or cursing is not
distracting, repeated words are minimized, word choices are creative and
effective, and figurative language (metaphor and simile) are fresh and
unique.
● Social Media Impact/ Audience Appeal 5%
o Only sensible feedback by the audience on the post and number of views
and comments on the website shall be the basis.

COMIC STRIP​ ​MAKING (DIGITAL)

Rationale:
Comic strip, a series of adjacent drawn images, usually arranged horizontally, that are
designed to be read as a narrative or a chronological sequence. The story is usually original in
this form. Words may be introduced within or near each image, or they may be dispensed with
altogether. Comic strips showcases the 21​st century skills of our modern-day artists. This allows
them to show the community not just their art, but the stories and the meaning that they want to
convey.
Guidelines and Mechanics:

1. A Comic strip shall be accomplished by the team, headed by the cartoonists. The theme
from which they will base their story from will be their teams’ official Flash Fiction
entry.

2. During the Second official Zoom session, the contest shall start with all participants of
each competing team, and the officer-in-charge at Zoom, through simultaneous meetings
in separated meeting rooms designated for each competing team. The cartoonists should
turn their Screen Share feature on, while the other participants should have their
microphones and cameras on.

3. The Comic Strip can follow any page orientation and format given that the Flash Fiction
story strongly reflects on the characters, texts, and illustrations shown in the art.

4. The Cartoonists are given exactly four (4) hours to digitalize and form their Flash Fiction
into a comic strip. If the participants finish ahead of time, they may pass their entries and
leave the meeting room.

5. The official entry must be submitted to ​20192042@spsps.edu.ph with the mail subject,
e.g. “HOUSE OF CENTAURS: Comic Strip Entry”, by the end of the second Zoom
session. After submission, the entries are no longer available for editing and shall be
considered as the teams’ official entry for (Digital) Comic Strip Making.

6. Participants will be judged based on the following criteria:

● Creativity and Presentation 35%


o The pictures and captions reflect an exceptional degree of student
creativity. There is great attention to detail. Work is in good shape and
matted when appropriate; all pieces are of equal artistic merit
● Effectiveness 30%
o Reflects the story conveyed in the Flash Fiction effectively and treats the
subject in a unique way.
● Composition 20%
o Works as a whole; elements flow together
● Technique and Expression 10%
o Creates texture and demonstrates strong drawing skills. Understands
perspective and has vivid imagery. Treats the subject in a unique way
● Social Media Impact/ Audience appeal 5%
o Only sensible feedback by the audience on the post and number of views
and comments on the website shall be the basis.
TOTAL 100%

DIGITAL POSTER MAKING (w/ short text teaser)

Rationale:
A digital poster is a digital image or motion graphic that displays relevant information to
an audience. It is simply what the name implies. In this modern day and age, digital art is a very
much appreciated form of conveying information through visually pleasing, and eye-catching
posters. The participants are going to be presenting their own digital poster, as the overall
interpretation representation for the stories and hopefully deliver what they want to share to the
audience and also inspire fellow artists to explore the world of digital art

1. The Digital Poster must be consistent and based on the Flash Fiction and Comic Strip
entries.

2. During the Third Official Zoom session, the contest shall start with all participants of
each competing team, and the officer-in-charge at Zoom, through simultaneous meetings

in separated meeting rooms for each competing team. The digital artist should turn their
Screen Share feature on, while the other participants should have their microphones and
cameras on.

3. The Digital Artist must create their digital posters from scratch. Using pre-made graphics
or those lifted from the internet such as flat vectors and illustrations, and using digital
poster generator platforms with free templates, are strictly prohibited. However, elements
that would enhance the poster such as textures, patterns, and gradients are allowed.

4. The participants headed by the Digital Artist shall then collaborate on composing an
original Digital Poster for their official Flash Fiction entry with the Title seen on the
poster.

5. The teams should only have one (1) paragraph for their short text teaser as the overall
caption for their digital poster and other entries. The text shall be submitted as a word
document to ​20192042@spsps.edu.ph within the time period and the document title, and
mail subject as e.g. HOUSE OF GRIFFINS: Short text Teaser.

6. The official entries for Digital Poster Making must be submitted to


20192042@spsps.edu.ph with the mail subject e.g. “HOUSE OF PHOENIX: Digital
Poster Making Entry.” After submission, the entries are no longer available for editing
and shall be considered as the teams’ official entry for Digital Poster Making.

8. Participants will be judged based on the following criteria:


● Relevance to the theme 35%
o Reflects the story conveyed in the Flash Fiction effectively and treats the
subject in a unique way through the Digital Poster.
● Originality 25%
o Participants’ are expected to come up with their own design and idea.
Artwork that belongs to other people will not be considered.
● Creativity 20%
o The pictures and captions reflect an exceptional degree of student
creativity. There is great attention to detail.
● Composition 15%

SLAM POETRY

Rationale:
Slam poetry is a re-invented traditional poetic form inspired from the centuries old
Balagtasan in Luzon through other place in the Philippines such as Ismayling, a poetic form
popular in Calbayog City. It is a poetic joust that commonly tackles dramatic issues or love
concerns. It has been popularized recently by banking on the popularity of the “Hugot” concept.
Slam poetry promotes creativity of every individual and an avenue for them to express their
feeling, thoughts, and emotions.

1. Each competing organization shall provide 1 participant who is a duly registered and
bona fide member of the competing organization they are representing and of Saint Paul
School of Professional Studies.

2. The contestant must prepare a memorized free-verse or poem tackling about experiences,
love issues, feelings or any dramatic and emotional issues. It can be in English, Filipino
or Waray language.

3. The piece must be of the participant’s own composition and submitted as a word
document to the Academics Committee on July 29, before 12:00PM for evaluation.

4. The piece must be submitted as a soft copy and in a short bond paper following the
format given:
Cover Page must consist the following:
● Name of the Organization
● Title of the Piece
● Name of the Participant
Printing Format for the piece:
● Font Size: 12 (any font style)

5. The contestant shall then submit their entry in a video format, to ​20192042@spsps.edu.ph
on July 30, 2020, before 6:00 PM with the mail subject e.g. “HOUSE OF HYDRA: Slam
Poetry Entry”

6. The video entry shall not be less than three (3) minutes and not more than seven (7)
minutes.

7. The participant’s face and voice should be evident throughout the whole video.

8. Participants are allowed to input subtitles, use musical instruments, and/or background
music in their video presentation. Color filtering/Video & Audio quality adjusting is also
allowed. Props such as microphones are also allowed.

9. Using foul and ghastly words are extremely prohibited during the competition. A
deduction of ten (10) points from the overall total points for the slam poetry contest shall
be deducted.

10. The entry will then be posted in the official YouTube Channel with the title of the Piece
and the house name as the title of the video (e.g. HOUSE OF PHOENIX: Ang Huling
Tula na Isusulat Ko para sa ‘Yo” wherein the Social Media Voting will be based upon the
likes, views and comments on the video posted. Spam comments will not be counted.

11. Participants will be judged based on the following criteria:

● Speech Content (Substance and Creativity) 40%


● Delivery (Clarity, Diction and Organization of Ideas) 35%
● Entertainment Value 15%
● Social Media Voting 10%
o Only sensible feedback by the audience, number of likes, number of views
on the website and on YouTube shall be the basis.
TOTAL 100%

8. The decision of the judges is final and irrevocable.

DAILY TRIVIA

Daily Trivia is a quizzing game involving fun facts and challenging questions. Through
this trivia, not only will the students learn something new, this may also serve as a support for
their house by engaging with the sites content, and contribute to their houses’ victory in a small
yet enjoyable way.

Guidelines and Mechanics:


1. This is open to all competing organizations’ constituents who should be bona fide senior
high school students of Saint Paul School of Professional Studies and must be duly
registered members of the competing organization represented.

2. The academics committee shall post daily trivia questions on the Senior High School
days official website to encourage students to view and engage on the contents on the
said website.

3. The competing organization with the greatest number of correct answers shall garner
additional points for their overall academic points.

4. The trivia are going to be posted at 8:00 AM and will end at 10:00 PM for the whole
duration of the Senior High School Days.

5. The house winners for each Daily Trivia will be announced daily.
