MTH 302. Assignment No. 2. Spring 2020

Question 1
The marks obtained by 30 students in a subject are given below:
15,20,21,22,35,40,45,16,31,22,26,29,18,41,49,43,48,23,28,32,36,38,24,29,30,46,42,44,25,50
Arrange the data into 8 classes with equal class interval and then find the mean of this grouped
data.
Answer:
First of all, I arranged the marks of 30 students in ascending order.
15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 29, 30, 31, 32, 35, 36, 38, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45,
46, 48, 49, 50
The lowest marks of student = 15
The greatest marks of student = 50
Required no. of classes = 8
Size of class = (The greatest marks of student – The lowest marks of student) / No. of class
= (50 – 15) / 8
= 35 / 8
= 4.375
= 5 (rounded value)
From the above information, we make the following table.
No. Class Tally Marks Frequency (f) Class Marks (X) fX
1 15 – 19 3 (15+19)/2 = 17 3 x 17 = 51
2 20 – 24 6 (20+24)/2 = 22 6 x 22 = 132
3 25 – 29 5 (25+29)/2 = 27 5 x 27 = 135
4 30 – 34 3 (30+34)/2 = 32 3 x 32 = 96
5 35 – 39 3 (35+39)/2 = 37 3 x 37 = 111
6 40 – 44 5 (40+44)/2 = 42 5 x 42 = 210
7 45 – 49 4 (45+49)/2 = 47 4 x 47 = 188
8 50 – 54 1 (50+54)/2 = 52 1 x 52 = 52
∑ f =30 ∑ f X=975
Mean = X̄ =
∑f X
∑f
= 975 / 30
= 32.5

Question 2
Find the quartile deviation of the following data.

10, 25, 11, 19, 10, 29, 15, 14, 17

Answer:

Sorted data = 10, 10, 11, 14, 15, 17, 19, 25, 29
Total numbers = 9
Q3−Q1
Formula = Quartile Deviation =
2
Q1 =?
Q3 =?
Q1 = (n+1)/4
= (9+1)/4
= 10/4
= 2.5
Q1 = 2nd value + 0.5 x (3rd value – 2nd value)
= 10 + [0.5 x (11 – 10)]
= 10 + [0.5 x (1)]
= 10 + 0.5
= 10.5
Q3 = 3(n+1)/4
= [3(9+1)]/4
= [3x10]/4
= 30/4
= 7.5

Q3 = 7th value + 0.5 x (8th value – 7th value)

= 19 + 0.5 x (25 – 19)
= 19+ (0.5 x 6)
= 19 + 3.0
= 22

Q3−Q1
Quartile Deviation =
2
= (22 – 10.5)/2
= 11.5 / 2
= 5.75
