3. Course Objectives
This course aims to
o enhance first-year students’ linguistic knowledge of English parts of speech, basic
grammar word structures and offer practice activities that help learners learn to
apply the knowledge effectively and accurately for spoken and written English;
o build up student lexical repertoire via practice tasks including word formation,
collocations, conjunctions, … under familiar topics;
o teach students to use English words which are synonyms and hyponyms of each
other (i.e. word sets).
o help students use knowledge of grammar and vocabulary range acquired during
the course to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing at CEFR B2 level.

5. Course Description
The Basic English Grammar II course is designed for first-year students of the English
Language Program and is delivered in the second semester of the eight-semester program.
The course equips students with basic grammatical knowledge that allows them to identify,
distinguish, and use of parts of speech, modals verbs, passive forms, relative clauses,
comparison, and other common structures of the English language. In addition to the
grammar focuses, the course aims to develop student lexical repertoire through vocabulary-
building tasks that help enhance their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to CEFR
B2 level. Students are expected to actively participate in class activities including individual
and group work, lectures, discussion, as well as independent study, such as homework and
self-study.

10. Students Responsibilities


For this course, students are required to
- organize self-study hours actively;
- complete mandatory hours of class attendance (students are allowed to be absent
up to 20% only of the course time which means 3 absences);
- complete reading assignments (textbook and/or materials/references recommended
by the lecturer);
- finish individual and group assignments;
- attend the mid-course test and the final exam;
- be honest, focused, no cheating or using google search tools while taking the mid-
course test and the final exam.
