A Narrative Report on
Offline Learning Opportunities Implementing Modular Approach in the Current Educational
System Webinar

Date: June 1, 2020

Lecturer: Jay Mhar “Dax” Gaffud
Sponsored by: Vibal

Goal or objective is the beginning of a greater cause – a reason to take a step forward. Thus,
the webinar started by introducing the learning objectives which are as follows: describe the current
educational system in the time of pandemic; understand the different modalities of distance learning;
recognize modular approach as one of the offline learning delivery modes; and show an example of
learning module based on the Most Essential Learning Competencies(MELCs).

In times of emergency such as the pandemic, COVID-19 that the nation is currently having,
various counter-measures were made. For the educational system, offline learning opportunities were
constructed which belongs to the Learning Continuity Plan(LCP) for 2020-2021. One of the
opportunities for learning is the modular approach. Learning Continuity Plan were defined by COL,
2020 as an educational system that assumes the physical presence of teachers and students in the
same place at the same time automatically excludes some students and cannot respond easily to
circumstances that force closure, whether due to pandemic, conflict, floods, and fires or some other
disaster. Thus, DepEd recommend the following under the LCP: Distance Learning, Blended
Learning, Home Schooling, Apprenticeship, and Face tot Face, highlighting the Blended Learning.
See the poster below.

Furthermore, the lecturer stated that when

implementing the Face to Face, the classroom
should only have a maximum of 20 students.
Also, in the academic year 2020-2021, teachers
are likely to teach from the very basic, e.g. proper
washing of hands.

Teachers should put in mind that not all

students have internet connection. Thus, online
learning cannot be seen as the only solution. For
distance learning, there are three ways for
implementation. First is the Printed Self-Learning
Modules. Second is the Offline Digital Self-
Learning Materials, wherein the DepEd highlights
or recommend the use of DepEd Commons. Last
is the Online Distance Learning where it has two
types, synchronous and asynchronous. For
Synchronous, all learners and teachers learn at
the same time as one virtually, while on the
Asynchronous, the teacher will record himself
and send it via internet then the students will just
listen and learn by themselves.

After presenting the Learning Delivery

Modalities, the lecturer presented the Modular
Approach. Modular instruction is defined as an
alternative instructional design that uses
developed instructional materials based on the
needs of the students.

By using modules, we could cater equitable

learning. However, when catering these materials, there should be enough timeframe and could be
connected to other stakeholders in the academe to establish clear and realistic learning objectives. A
module is a unit, chapter, topic, or segment of instruction. Thus, should have a 1 week timeframe
which is ideal. The objectives written on the module are the learning competencies. Therefore, the
learning objectives should be attained.

The question now is how to make a

module? The following are the elements
.that make up a module: 1. Introduction,
Course Rationale & Objectives; 2. Activities to engage
students, information; 3. Exercises to practice,
apply, and synthesize. In this element, the
teacher should be creative so that learning would
Module 1 Module 2 Module 3 be fun; 4. Assessment and reflection. In here,
you could know the feelings and hidden thoughts
of the students and this will also serve as a base for the development of the module; 5. Feedback;
and 6. Additional Resources. The structure of each individual module may be unique, or it may be
consistent pattern that is repeated throughout the course, in which case, the structure of the first
module created can serve as a pattern or template for other modules in a course. In this way,
students won’t be confused on what to do next on the next module. The previous module will serve as
their reference how to do the other one and modules to come.

The lecturer stated that “The module is you.” Module is made for personal use because this
could be used as if teaching in person.

To use modules effectively to organize the course content, follow the following tips:

1. Identify key topic areas; 2. Label your modules clearly and consistently. Lay first your objectives,
followed by the assessments, instruction, and module label comes last; and 3. Create modules of
consistent structure (time span, work required, due date). For example, if the first module has a time
span of 1 week, the following module should also have the same.

Not all students have the same situation e.g. the parents could read, has deep comprehension,
always at home, etc. Therefore, when writing modules, use simple terms so that when students could
not understand, their parents or relatives are there to help them, return the module in a timely
manner, and write a feedback so that the students would know where to improve on.
