University Students’ Perspicacity of Gender Discrimination in the Workplace: Realism

versus Fantasy

Abstract

 Purpose: For 50 years, legislation like the Civil Rights Act 1964 and the Equal Pay Act of
1963 shielded women from blatant discrimination. But since gender inequity remains in the
workforce today, the related stakeholders tend to underestimate its impact and consequences.
Informal studies have shown that students at the college find themselves resistant to
discrimination of gender. This paper examines the perceptions of students regarding potential
discrimination against gender. Research shows that students view gender discrimination as
having a minimal impact and are likely to enter a gender-neutral workforce. Such perceptions
can have adverse effects on organizations and staff but awareness may be used to mitigate
such effects.

 Design/ Methodology/ Approach: The proposed research shall be descriptive. The scope of

the study will be confined to 100 students of universities in India. Purposive sampling will be
used to target the respondents using a semi-structured questionnaire.

 Statistical Tools: To test the hypotheses and survey findings scientifically, the researcher will
analyze the data using SPSS.

 Practical Implications: The paper would include information ensuring that college students
are properly trained and prepared for gender inequality and other unequal job practices in the
workforce realities. Employers will continue to make concerted efforts to educate employees,
especially recent college graduates on the realities of discrimination in the workplace, and
tackle gender discrimination through policies, training, and compliance. We believe that if
students are adequately prepared for the likelihood of gender discrimination in the workplace,
they will mitigate the effect of the extrinsic consequences of gender discrimination, such as
lost opportunities for promotion or the intrinsic consequences of gender discrimination, such
as the negative effects of discrimination on self-confidence, job satisfaction wherein reduction
in such effects of gender inequality can benefit an organization in terms of increased
productivity, engagement and retention.
