72nd Ateneo Fiesta: Ignatian Cup 2020

OFFICIAL GUIDELINES

I. Tournament Details
Dates: August 10 – 13, 2020
Debate Format: Asian Parliamentary Format
Elimination Rounds: Three (3) Rounds
Break to: Quarterfinals (8 breaking teams)
Platform: Discord, Zoom
Participants: 9 Clusters (2 teams per cluster)

II. Participants and Eligibility


• Each cluster will have to send at most two (2) teams for the Ignatian Cup. Each team shall
be comprised of three (3) debaters: a first speaker, a deputy speaker, and a whip speaker.
• Only bona fide students of Ateneo de Davao University for the First Semester of Academic
Year 2020-2021 are allowed to participate.
• The participants may come from any year level of the cluster given that:
a. they are not current members of the Ateneo Debate Varsity;
b. they have not represented ADV in any outside tournament before;
c. they have not won the Championship of previous Ignatian Cup tournaments.
• Previous Ateneo Debate Varsity members who are no longer officially part of the
organization still cannot join and represent their cluster. However, previous trainees of
ADV who have not represented the organization in any outside tournament before can join.
• Previous participants of the Ignatian Cup who did not win the Championship may still join
and represent their cluster. No limit is imposed.
• Prior debate experience is not required.

III. Training-Related Concerns and Conflict of Interests


• Cluster SECs can tap on current Ateneo Debate Varsity members who belong in the same
cluster as them to train their participants.
• The Ateneo Debate Varsity members can either accept or reject the responsibility.
• Having trainers outside of Ateneo Debate Varsity is allowed.

• Any ADV member, whether or not they have trained their cluster, will not be allowed to
adjudicate on a round where the participants from the same cluster is in.
• Debate motions will not be released to Ateneo Debate Varsity members. Only the ADV
President, Training Director, and Moderator will have access to the motion list.

IV. Debate Motions


• Debate motions can range anywhere from national politics to school-related issues.
• The ADV President, Training Director, and Moderator will be the ones who will make the
debate motions. However, they can consult with ADV alumni.
• The ADV can consult the SAMAHAN Central Board about the topics/themes that they
want to be debated on. However, the actual motions will be made by ADV.
• No hints on the motions will be given to anyone.

V. Debate Format
• The Ignatian Cup will be using the Asian Parliamentary Format.
• Two teams will be debating against one another in a round: the Government and the
Opposition. They will have 30 minutes of preparation time.
• The Government team will be debating in favor of the motion. The Opposition team will
be debating against the motion.
• The sequence of the speakers is as follows: Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition, Deputy
Prime Minister, Deputy Leader of Opposition, Government Whip, and Opposition Whip.
• Each speaker is given a maximum of 7 minutes and 15 seconds of speech time. After that,
the adjudicator will no longer be taking notes.
• Points of Information (POIs) may be raised within the first minute and sixth minute of the
speech. POIs shall not exceed 15 seconds.
• Accepting Points of Information (POIs) is not mandatory, although highly encouraged.
Debaters can choose to accept or reject a POI.

VI. Adjudication
• Current ADV members will be the ones adjudicating the rounds. However, the ADV can
also reach out to its alumni to adjudicate.
• The panel of adjudicators will be odd-numbered.

• The Chair of the round will be the one giving an oral adjudication.
• Debaters have to rate their Chair and give feedback after the round just so we can gather,
hear, and address your concerns.

VII. Scoring and Awards


• The speaker score range for debaters is 67-83; adjudicator rating is 1-10. A detailed
explanation about this scoring range will be discussed during the online orientation.
• The speaker scores of the debaters for all three (3) elimination rounds will be the basis for
awarding the Top 10 Best Speakers of the tournament during the awarding ceremony.
• The Finals Best Speaker will also be awarded. Only one team will win the Championship.

IX. Registration and Orientation


• The ADV will be sending out a Google Form for registration of teams. Registration will
only be until August 05, 2020, 11:59 PM.
• The ADV will conduct an online orientation via Google Meet for all participants on August
06, 2020, 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

X. Platform Guidelines
• The 3 elimination rounds and the Quarterfinals will be conducted via Discord.
• The Semifinals and the Grandfinals will be live streamed on Facebook via Zoom.
• A detailed Manual for Discord and Tournament Proceedings is attached herewith.
