Eco-Friendly School
Eco Friendly: Definition

 As per Wikipedia: Eco-Friendly (also Environment-friendly , nature

friendly, and green) are ambiguous terms used to refer to goods and

services, laws, guidelines and policies claimed to inflict reduced, minimal, or no

harm at all, upon ecosystems or the environment.

Why Sustainability a Global Concern?

Buildings Consume  Buildings Contribute

50% of Air pollution.
40% of total energy consumption.
42% of Green House gas.
60% of electricity consumption.
50% of Water Pollution.
42% of potable water consumption.
48% of Solid waste.
50% of raw materials.
50% of CFC emission.
Sustainability: Outlook from India
 With 8% consistent rise in the annual energy consumption in the residential and
commercial sectors, building energy consumption has witnessed the growth from a
low of 14% in 1970s to 33% in 2004-05.
 Per Capita Water availability is poised to reduce from 2464 cum. in 1990 to 1700
cum in 2025.
 CPCB estimates the generation of 48 million tonnes of solid waste annually in the
country, out of which 25% of waste is from construction industry.
 At macro level, extensive urbanization is leading to uncontrollable “Heat Island
Effect”.
 These lead to increase in the temperature which increases the consumption of
electricity for Air conditioning and other cooling devices which eventually lead to
emission of Green House gases.
Thus, there is an urgent need to address these issues at the micro level during
Settlement planning level and planning for buildings.
Life Cycle Cost vs. First Cost
All of the decisions affecting the buildings entire life cycle cost are made in the
smallest portion of the building life cycle cost-“design”.
High performance design must be incorporated from the start.
Eco Friendly Schools
Uses 33% less energy.
Consumes 32% less water.
Reduces solid waste by 74%.
Increases Student Performance
By 10-21% improvement in learning rates and test scores.
Lower absenteeism and increased teacher turnover.
Design Principles and Strategies for Eco Friendly School
Site Selection and Planning by incorporating the Climatic elements.
Building Envelope Design.
 Landscaping and Green belts.
 Reduced Transportational Impacts.
 Building System Design (HVAC, Lighting, Electrical etc.).
 Integration of Renewable energy sources to generate energy on-site.
 Water and waste treatment.
 Selection of ecologically sustainable construction materials.
 Indoor environmental quality.
 Day lighting and visual comfort.
 Acoustical and Thermal Comfort.
 Design Problem: Proposed Eco-Friendly School at Five different Climatic

zones of India. [Cold & Sunny: Leh (Roll No.2-12) , Cold & Cloudy: Shillong

(Roll No.13-24), Hot & Humid: Auroville (Roll No. 25-31), Composite: Indore

(Roll No.32-39), Hot & Dry: Jodhpur (Roll No.40-46)].

 Site Context

 Site Area: 8 Acres.

 Site Configuration: Corner Plot with 16m wide road abutting on two sides.

 Max. Permissible Ground Coverage: 50%.

 FAR : 1.5

Site should be in urban area, with close proximity to the residential clusters of the

city.

 Easy accessibility by Air/Rail/Road route.
