Dr. Give Up The Grind — Tooth, That Is!

It is estimated that up to 95 percent of people experience bruxism- tooth grinding- at
some time in their lives. Bruxism is caused by stress and can even strain relationships
by causing a lot of nighttime noise.

Most people clench or grind their teeth in their sleep with increasing frequency and
intensity during particularly stressful times. If you wake up in the morning with stiff and
painful jaw muscles, you may well have been clenching during the night. This habit can
not only cause aching muscles, but can wear down your natural teeth and damage any
existing dental work, such as crowns, fillings,
implants, veneers, etc.
Possible treatments for bruxism include wearing
a hard, plastic bite splint on the upper teeth,
taking anti-anxiety medication, making lifestyle
changes to lessen stress or aide in stress
management. The “cure” for tooth grinding can
be affected by the patient’s motivation, but many
cases of bruxism can be kept under control with
a bite splint, also known as a night guard.

If you think you might be grinding your teeth, talk with us about your symptoms and
concerns. You might save yourself more than a morning headache!

I’ve heard so much lately about the dangers of gum disease.

How do I know if I
have a problem with
gum disease?

Periodontal (gum) disease often develops silently, with no warning signs. That’s why
it’s important to visit our office regularly, so we can check your teeth and gums and
take x-rays, if necessary, to help us diagnose possible problems.
Periodontal disease begins with plaque, a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that
constantly forms on the teeth and gums. If plaque is not removed regularly, the
bacteria create toxins that irritate the gums, making them swollen, red and likely to
bleed easily. If left unchecked, the toxins cause gum tissues to detach from the teeth,
creating pockets where food particles and more plaque may collect.
It’s important that you be aware of the “eight silent signs” that may be symptoms
of periodontal (gum) disease.
1. Gums that bleed when you brush your teeth
2. Red, swollen or tender gums
3. Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
4. Pus that appears between your teeth and gums when the gums are pressed
5. Teeth that are becoming loose or changing position
6. Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
7. Any change in the way that your partial dentures or invisible aligner trays fit
8. Bad breath or bad taste in your mouth, not associated with recent meals
Please call us for an appointment as soon as possible if you’ve noticed any of these
changes. To remove plaque, you should brush twice daily (preferably with an electric
toothbrush) and clean between your teeth daily with dental floss.
