Question no 1: Marks: 15
The following are the weights (kg) and blood glucose levels (mg/100 ml) of 8 apparently healthy
Adult males:
Weight (X) 64.0 75.3 73.0 82.1 76.2 95.7 59.4 93.4
Glucose (Y) 108 109 104 102 105 121 79 107
(i) Find the regression equation describing the linear relationship between the two
variables.
(ii) Give a brief interpretation of the values of a and b calculated in part (ii).
(iii) Compute the coefficient of determination. What percentage of the variation in
Glucose is explained by the least squares regression of glucose on the percentage of
weight? What percentage of this variation is not explained?
Question no 2: Marks: 10
(a) Sick Days in Bed A researcher wishes to see if the average number of sick days a worker
takes per year is greater than 5. A random sample of 32 workers at a large department
store had a mean of 5.6. The standard deviation of the population is 1.2. Is there enough
evidence to support their searcher’s claim at α = 0.01?
(b) A paint manufacturing company claims that the mean drying time for its paints is not
longer than 45 minutes. A random sample of 20 gallons of paints selected from the
production line of this company showed that the mean drying time for this sample is
49.50 minutes with a standard deviation of 3 minutes. Assume that the drying times for
these paints have a normal distribution.
(i) Using the 1% significance level, would you conclude that the company’s claim
is true?
(ii) What is the Type I error in this exercise? Explain in words. What is the
probability of making such an error?
Question no 3: Marks: 10
(a) According to the records of an electric company serving the Boston area, the mean electricity
consumption for all households during winter is 1650 kilowatt-hours per month. Assume that the
monthly electricity consumptions during winter by all households in this area have a normal
distribution with a mean of 1650 kilowatt-hours and a standard deviation of 320 kilowatt-hours.
(i). Find the probability that the monthly electricity consumption during winter by a randomly
selected household from this area is less than 1950 kilowatt-hours.
(ii). what percentage of the households in this area have a monthly electricity consumption of
900 to 1300 kilowatt-hours?
(b) For the standard normal distribution, find the area within one and half standard deviation of
the mean –that is the area between and .

Question no 4: Marks: 15
(a) A set of eight cards contains one joker. A and B are two players and A chooses 5 cards at
random, B taking the remaining 3 cards. What is the probability that A has the Joker.
(b) If 2% of electric bulbs manufactured by a certain company are defective. Find the probability
that in a sample of 200 bulbs i) less than 2 bulbs ii) more than 3 bulbs are defective.

(c) The experience of a house-agent indicates that he can provide suitable accommodation for 75
percent of the clients who come to him. If on a particular occasion, 6 clients approach him
independently, calculate the probability that (i) less than 4 clients, (ii) exactly 4 clients, (iii) at
least 5 clients, will get satisfactory accommodation.
(d) Bender Electronics buys keyboards for its computers from another company. The keyboards
are received in shipments of 100 boxes, each box containing 20 keyboards. The quality control
department at Bender Electronics first randomly selects one box from each shipment and then
randomly selects 5 keyboards from that box. The shipment is accepted if not more than 1 of the 5
keyboards is defective. The quality control inspector at Bender Electronics selected a box from a
recently received shipment of keyboards. Unknown to the inspector, this box contains 6
defective keyboards.
(i). what is the probability that this shipment will be accepted?
(ii). what is the probability that this shipment will not be accepted?
