THE REALITY OF REDEMPTION - LESSON 3

By: Kay Siulapwa Registration Number: 0009
Explain the what, the when and the how of redemption.
Redemption is the work that Christ accomplished for the salvation of mankind; it is concerned with that
aspect of salvation that was accomplished in the death of Jesus Christ. Redemption means ransom, or
price paid, to purchase or buy back. It speaks of paying a price to purchase something (we have been
purchased by God- 1 Pet.1:18-19; 1 Cor. 6:20; 7:23; 2 Pet. 2:1); it is the price on a product that gives it
the value to has. Therefore, the price determines the value of the material, and we must be conscious of
our redemption in Christ at all times because God has set a high value on all mankind- Titus 3:4-5; John
15:13; Heb.2:6-11.
The price that was paid for our redemption was the blood of Jesus Christ- Eph. 1:7; Matt. 26:28; Luke
22:20; Rom. 3:23-25. Our redemption is in His blood, where we have the forgiveness of sins, and this was
according to the riches of His grace, meaning the price was paid on my behalf; nothing was asked of us;
we contributed nothing to the payment of the price for our redemption- Acts 20:28; Titus 2:14. Grace
means what we did not pay for, merit or deserve, being cheaply handed over to us, without conditions.
Our part is to enjoy what somebody has suffered for and paid for- Col. 1:12-14.
Our redemption is in a person, Jesus, and it is through His blood we have forgiveness of sins. Deliverance
can only come by Christ and His death has done it already! The price paid on our behalf is the blood of
Jesus; we have redemption only through the blood of Jesus, i.e. His death, burial and resurrection on the
third day.
When did this happen and how?
Redemption was not complete until Jesus rose from the dead (1 Cor. 15:14 & 17). The cross is the place
where it began, but it was not completed on the cross. It was completed when Jesus rose on the third day
and ascended on majesty on high, and presented the blood (Himself)- Heb. 9:12-15. And the Father
accepted that sacrifice- Heb. 9:24-28; 10:12-14.
With His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption-
Heb. 9:14. Jesus shed His blood for the remission of our sins- Matt. 26:28; Mark 14:24.
Under the shadow in Lev. 16:14-19, the sprinkling of the blood took place on the mercy seat and before
the mercy seat. The shedding of blood was done every year on the day of atonement by the High priest,
and this was done behind the veil where he sprinkled the blood on the mercy seat. So, the sprinkling of
the blood on the mercy seat was the shedding of blood, and this act atoned for the sins of the Israelites for
a whole year; but it could not take away sin. Only the blood of Jesus could remit their sins and the sins of
the whole world; only He could take away the sins of the world- John 1:29; Isa. 53:6; 1 John 2:2; Heb.
9:12.
Jesus offered Himself through the eternal Spirit without spot unto God by His blood (Heb. 9:14) and
obtained eternal redemption for us (Heb. 9:12).
We thank God for His amazing grace- Eph. 2:8-9.
