write during the first 15 minutes. This time is to be spent in reading the Question Paper. The time given
at the head of this Paper is the time allowed for writing the answers.

Question 1

(a) (i) State and define the S.I. unit of power.

(ii) How is the unit horse power related to the S.I. unit of power? [2]

(e) A cell is used to send current to an external circuit. (i) How does the voltage across its
terminal compare with its emf?

(ii) Under what condition is the emf of a cell equal to its terminal voltage? [2]

(c) A radar sends a signal to an aeroplane at a distance 45 km away with a speed 3 x 108 ms-1. After

in parallel, NOT in series. Give two reasons for connecting them in parallel. [2]
(d) An electrical heater is rated 4 kW, 220V. Find the cost of using this heater for 12 hours if one
kWh of electrical energy costs Rs. 3.25. [2]
(e) calculate the quantity of heat produced in a 20 ohm resistor of carrying 2.5 A current in 5
minutes.

(c) Define the term electric potential. State it's S.I. unit [2]
(d) The diagram above shows a circuit with the key k open. Calculate: (i) the resistance of the circuit
when the key k is open. (ii) the current drawn from the cell when the key k is open. (iii) the resistance of
the circuit when the key k is closed. (iv) the current drawn from the cell when the key k is closed. [4]
