Lesson Plan: Holiday Items Be Going To (Negative, Interrogative, Short Answers)
Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, pupils will be better able to:
Anticipated problems:
- some pupils might feel nervous and reluctant to participate in the activity, thus they may need
assistance;
- some students might need further help and extra indications in solving the tasks and they may
also need some of these indications to be given in Romanian.

STAGES OF THE LESSON
1. Warm-up
Aim:
- to create a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere
Time: 3 minutes
Interaction: T - pupils, pupils -T
Procedure:
Teacher greets the pupils, asks about their mood and the pupils answer. Teacher checks the
attendance, then the pupils sing the Hello song.
2. Lead-in
Aim:
- to consolidate the language of unit 12a
Time: 5 minutes
Interaction: T- pupils, pupils -T
Procedure:
Chinese Whispers
T. tells the pupils they are going to play a game. T. explains the rules and starts by
whispering a holiday item taught in Unit 12a to a pupil. T. asks him/her to whisper the same
word to his/her partner, who then whispers it to the next pupil, etc. T. asks the last pupil to call
out the word and check if it is the correct one. T. repeats the procedure as many times as she
thinks is necessary.
Aim:
- to present and activate the vocabulary of the unit
Time: 10 minutes
Interaction: T- pupils, Group work
Procedure:
T. writes a big 48 on the board and asks the pupils to open their books at page forty-eight. T.
reads the title of the unit and has pupils repeat after her. T. elicits / explains what the title means,
writes the title and the date on the board and the pupils copy in their notebook. Teacher informs
the pupils about the lesson’s aims.
T. puts the On holiday poster on the board. T. points to the items (surf, wetsuit, dive, camp,
souvenir, rucksack, map, tent), one at a time, and says the corresponding word. The pupils listen
and repeat, chorally and individually. T. introduces / writes the new vocabulary on the board and
the pupils copy in their notebooks.
T. asks the pupils to form groups of three or four in order to complete a worksheet related to
the new vocabulary. Pupils form groups and the T. shares one worksheet with each group
(Annex I). At the end of the activity, one pupil from each group will say a word which they had
to write on the worksheet.
Aim:
- to develop the pupils’ listening and reading skills;
- to check the comprehension of the text.
Time: 5 minutes
Interaction: T - pupils, pupils –T
Procedure:
Ex. 1 / page 48. T. reads the instructions. T. goes through the pictures of the dialogue and
sets the scene by asking questions.
e.g. Teacher: (pointing to picture 1) Where are the children?
Pupils: They’re at Port Fairy.
Teacher: (pointing to picture 3) What’s Alvin wearing?
Pupils: A wetsuit. etc
T. writes on the board: Are they going to go surfing? T. asks the pupils to listen to the
dialogue and find the answer. T. plays the recording and the pupils listen, follow along and
complete the task.
Answer: No, they aren’t.
Ex. 2 / page 48. T. reads the instructions. T. asks the pupils to read the dialogue and match
the sentences. The pupils read and complete the task.
T. holds up her book to the class. T. reads out the first part of some sentences from the
dialogue and asks the pupils to say the other part of the sentences. The pupils listen and say.
5. Extension
Aims:
- to develop the pupils’ speaking skills;
- to present and practise the interrogative, negative and short answer forms of ‘be going to’.
Time: 12 minutes
Ex. 3 / page 49. Pupils’ books open. T. asks the pupils to read the sentences in the grammar
box. T. explains the task and what Nature Day is (a day when people celebrate nature by doing
outdoor activities). T. asks individual pupils to read out the activities and the example. In pairs,
the pupils ask and answer questions. T. asks some pairs to report back to the class.
6. Guided practice
Aim:
- to develop the pupils’ reading and writing skills;
- to provide guidance in practising the vocabulary and grammar structures.
Time: 5 minutes
Procedure:
Ex. 5 / page 49. T. reads the instructions and explains the task. The pupils complete the song
in their notebooks. T. plays the recording, twice if necessary. The pupils listen and check their
answers.
7. Feedback
Aims:
- to obtain feedback on individual pupils;
- to reward the pupils for their answers and for having participated actively in class.
Time: 3 minutes
Interaction: T - pupils, pupils - T
Procedure:
T. asks the pupils to tell her how they feel about the unit. T. asks if they can tell her what
they have learnt and which activity they liked the best. Pupils answer individually.
T. praises the pupils for having participated actively in class and rewards them with positive
points in her register.
8. Homework assignment
Aim:
- to provide further practice of the vocabulary and the structure of the unit
Time: 2 minutes
Interaction: T - pupils
Procedure:
Annex 2. T. reads the instructions and explains the task. T. asks the pupils to file the paper
in their Junior Language Portfolios.
