GLAZING
PART 1 – GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. This section includes, but is not limited to, the followings:
1. Glass for ANZ Royal Building facade and storefront.
2. Glass for exterior doors.
3. Glass for guardrails.
4. Glass for mirrors.
5. Glass for partitions
B. Related requirement specified elsewhere:
1. Steel doors and frames (Section 08112 STEEL DOORS AND FRAMES).
2. Mock-ups (Section 08982 FAÇADE/CURTAIN WALL MOCK-UPS).
3. Toilet accessories (Section 10800 TOILET ACESSORIES).
1.2 REFERENCES
A. Foreign standards are referenced as they support the design intent. Alternate
standards may be proposed for consideration by the Engineer. The Engineer shall
be the sole judge as to whether the proposed standards adequate support the
design intent.
B. The work is subject to applicable portions of the following standards:

C. In case of conflict between the referenced standards and the contract documents,
the Engineer shall be the sole judge as to which requirements shall be applied.
6. Glass center deflection relative to glass at specified design wind and live
load pressures and deflection relative to glass edges specified design wind and live
load pressures and gravity load on sloped and horizontal glass shall not exceed
Engineer’s requirements. Glass deflection at 1.5 times design wind and live load
pressures shall be limited to prevent disengagement from the frame.
7. Glass shall not experience spontaneous breakage.
8. Glass shall be installed windtight and weathertight. The air permeability
per unit length of joints shall be less than 0.1 m3 /(h.m) for a pressure different of
10 Pa according to DIN 18055.
9. For ceramic frit printed interlayer custom dot patterns the tolerances shall
not exceed 0.2 mm for dot size and 1.0 mm for the distance between the centres of
black and white dots. Solar and visual transmittance through fritted or printed
parts of glass shall be zero.
10. The sound reduction coefficient R the glazing types G2, G3, and G4’s shall
have at minimum the following values according to DIN 52210:

1.5 SUBMITALS
A. Make all submission in the manner conforming with Section 01300
SUBMITALS.
B. Submit manufacturer’s product data with application and installation
instructions for all products in accordance with Section 01300 SUBMITALS.
Product data shall include certificates and test reports necessary to show
compliance with Contract Documents.
C. Within one month after award of contract the Contractor shall submit the
following samples in accordance with Section 01300 SUBMITALS.
1. Three samples of glass, each type, displaying safety glass labeling
when applicable, 300 x 300mm identical to the glass to be used in the
work. Furnish additional samples as required by the Engineer at no
additional cost.
2. Non-structural glazing gasket, 300 x 300mm conrner.
3. Ceramic frit colors, 300 x 300mm.
D. Within three months after award of contract, Contractor shall submit the
following samples in accordance with Section 01300 SUMITALS:
1. Two samples each of glass types G2, G3, and G4’s identical in size and
requirements to the glass to be used in the work, mounted individually
on site to be approved by the Engineer.

per thousand for each typical size of light at maximum design wind load. The
certificate shall also state that the glass manufacturer has reviewed the glazing
details for their effect on thermal and wind load breakage and finds such details
acceptable for the intended installation.
J. Submit a certificate from the tempered glass manufacturer attesting that each
tempered glass light, when delivered to the site, is free of edge damage,
scratches, and other imperfections that might result in failure in service.
K. Submit a certification from the laminated glass manufacturer attesting that each
laminated glass light, when delivered to the site, is free of dirt, foreign
material, air pockets, and similar deficiencies that might result in failure in
service, and that glazing materials to be used, including sealants, fritting,
coatings, and intermediate will not cause deterioration or discoloration of film
or delaminating of plies.
L. Submit a certification from the glazing sealant manufacturer attesting that the
proposed glazing system details have been reviewed and that the proposed
materials, including sealants, are suitable for their intended use, are compatible
with each other, glass, and materials used for the framing system, and will
achieve proper adhesion on the involved substrates.
M. Submit glazing materials and details for installation of glass to the glass
manufacturer for a written certificate of approval prior to ordering materials
under this section. Submit the certification to the Engineer.
N. The Engineer’s review of glazing materials, details, and procedure for
installation of glass proposed by the Contractor shall not waive the warranties
or the performance requirements specified for glazing.
O. Submit field record documents in accordance with Section 01700 CONTRACT
CLOSEOUT.
P. Submit a comprehensive installation procedure report, including drawings,
sketches and structural analysis report to clearly show proposed installation
procedure for glass elements during all stages of construction, including
shipping. This report shall clearly illustrate the location and size of temporary
shoring and cable guys, and shall clearly indicate and detail interaction and
B. Warranty shall that glass and glazing materials will remain windtight,
weathertight, dusttight, ultraviolet resistant, and color stable and that glass not
break due to defects in the material throughout the warranty period.
C. Warranty shall state that film not form and dust will not collect between the
interior surfaces of insulating glass units for period of 10 years.
D. Warranty shall state that laminated glass units will not cloud or delaminate for
period of 10 years.
E. Warranty shall state that tempered glass will not experience spontaneous
breakage. At the Contractor’s option, as described in Design Requirements
article of Part 1 of this section, warranty shall include, in lieu of 100 percent
heat soak testing, a replacement program consisting of labor and materials
necessary to replace tempered glass which experiences spontaneous breakage.
F. Repairs and replacements made under the warranty shall bear an additional
warranty of 1 year or longer period standard with the manufacturer.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
A. Float glass: ASTM C 1036, Type I, Class 1, Quality q3 (glazing select).
B. Float glass, tinted, green: ASTM 1036, Type I, Class 2, Style A (higher light
transmittance), Quality q3 (glazing select).
C. Silicone sealant for standard glazing: material conforming by the silicone
sealant manufacturer for compatibility with the polyvinyl butyral plastic
interlayer of laminated glass. Colors shall be black or custom mixed colors
selected by the Engineer.
1. Acceptable manufacturer, subject to compliance with the Contractor
Documents:
a. Dow Corning Corp.
b. General Electric Co.
c. Tremco, Inc.
D. Tape for use with silicone sealant: premolded or extruded black tape as
recommended by the silicone sealant manufacturer.
E. Sealant primer: as recommended by the sealant manufacturer black, where
visible.
F. Backup materials for use with silicone glazing sealants: open sell urethane
foam, polyethylene foam, or extruded silicone backer rod, as recommended by
the sealant manufacturer.
Setting blocks: fabricated from EPDM shaped to the required sizes and thickness. Shore A
durometer hardness shall be 70 to 90 points. The materials shall be compatible with the type
G. of glazing materials used and shall not cause staining or discoloration of the
materials or the frame.
H. Spacers: fabricated from EPDM shaped to the required sizes and thickness.
Shore A durometer hardness shall be 40 to 50 points. The material shall be
compatible with the type of glazing materials used and shall not cause staining
or discoloration of the materials of the frame.
I. Non-structural glazing gaskets: glazing gaskets, sealant backers within glazing
pockets, and continuous spacers at glass shall be black heat cured silicone
rubber (Type I where sealant adhesion is to be prevented and type II when
adhesion is desired). Properties falling within the range listed below are
acceptable provided that adequate glass support and weather seals are
achieved.

including backers for structural silicone sealant, shall have a continuous spline
or a continuous groove which engages a matching groove or leg on the
aluminum frame.
J. Interlayer for laminated glass: clear or tined as indicated, polyvinyl butyral
plastic film (PVB). Adhesion between PVB and glass surface shall withstand
water migration into the PVB layer or glass temperatures of 70 degree C to
prevent delaminating. Colors and custom patterns are shown on the drawings.

K. Ceramic frit coating shall conform to the requirements for coatings for ASTM
C 1048, Condition B glass and be not less than 0.04mm thick. Color and
pattern shall be as sown on the drawings. Bands shall be of sufficient width to
conceal surface of sealants.
L. Low-emissivity coating: ASTM C 1376.
M. Slip-resistant coating: permanent fire-fused ceramic coating, translucent.
Texture and custom color shall be selected by the Engineer.

a. “ESG Bi-color 1020.90” (BGT Bischoff Glastechnik, D-75015
Bretten, Germany)
N. Coating for etched glass: “Clear Shield” (CW Glass Design, Inc.) or “Skyline
Etch Sealer”(Skyline Design)
2.2 PROCESSED GLASS
A. Heat strengthens glass: glass of indicated type and color that has been heat
treated to strengthen glass. Allowable stress shall be not less than 29 MPa.
Edge compression shall be not less than 38 MPa. Heat strengthened glass shall
meet requirements of ASTM C 1048, 1048, kind HS, Glass shall be processed
by a method which minimized visual distortion and eliminates processing
marks. Glass shall be manufactured without loss of strength where ceramic
fritz is applied. Required testing shall be performed at no addition cost.
B. Tempered glass: glass of indicated type and color that has been treated to
strengthen glass. Allowable stress shall be not less than 50 MPa. Edge
compression shall be not less than 67 MPa. Tempered glass shall be fully
tempered and labeled as meeting requirements of ANSI Z97.1,CPSC Standard
16 CFR 1201, and ASTM C 1048, Kind FT. Glass shall be processed by a
method which minimizes visual distortion and eliminates processing marks.

2. Other manufacturers maybe approved by the Engineer if it is proven
that their products meet the standard of design and quality, subject to
compliance with the Contract Documents.
2.4 GLASS SCHEDULE

C. Glass Type G3: Laminated safety glass units composed of two (2) panes of
heat strengthened glass and a tinted PVB interlayer with hard coated Low-E on
surface #4.

2.5 FABRICATION
A. Source mock-ups:
C. Flatness criteria:
1. Surface flatness deviation shall not exceed the following tolerances:
1.6mm in 460mm, 2.4mm in 1220mm, 3.2mm in 1520mm, 4.8mm in 2740mm,
or 9.5mm in 3660mm. Where the strengthening process, results in essentially
parallel ripples or waves, the deviation from flatness at any peak shall not
exceed 0.5mm, and the difference between adjacent peaks shall not exceed
0.25mm. Where bow tolerance and wave tolerance differ, the stricter
requirement shall govern. Direction of ripples shall be consistent and in
conformance with architectural design.
2. For each glass type with the original panel size solar optical properties and
emissivity values of applied low-e coatings as specified above shall be
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Inspect edges before glass is installed and ascertain that glass is free of defects.
Openings shall be plumb, square, and in true plane before glazing. Employ
only skilled installers. Set glass without springing, using specified materials in
accordance with the recommendations of the glass manufacturer.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Completely remove protective coating in the glazing area, if any, and clean
surfaces with a solvent recommended by the manufacturer of the glazing
material. The use of gasoline, benzene, and similar substances will not be
allowed.
E. Butt glazing:
1. Seal vertical butt joints between adjacent lights of glass with standard
black silicone sealant, unless otherwise indicated. Mask and tool both
sides of joint.
1. Edges shall be clean cut. Do not install with flared edges at bottom.
3. A void cold edge effects and temperature differences over the glass.

3.6 PROTECTION
B. Glazed openings shall be marked with tapes or banners suspended near but not
in contact with the glass. Tapes or banners may be attached to the opening at
the head, jambs, or sills with a non-staining adhesive or by other mechanical
means. Do not mark or coat glass with soap, wax, cleaning powder, or other
materials.
