1.3 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

A. Design, furnish, and install the glass components of the glazed façade systems
of the ANZ Royal Building, including determination of glass thickness, in
accordance with the design requirements, performance requirements, and
installation tolerance specified herein. Indication of glass thickness on the
drawings minimum required thickness only and does not relieve Contractor of
design engineering responsibility.
B. Not used
C. Provide 100 percent heat soak testing of tempered glass as describe in
Processed Glass article of Part 2 of this section or, at the Contractor’s option,
provide the Owner with a guaranteed replacement program, including labor
and materials, as described in Warranty article of Part 1 of this section.
D. Glass shall be of specified types, free from flaws and complying with grade
requirements. All panels of each type of glass shall be produced by the same
manufacturer. Each shipment of glass shall bear a manufacturer’s statement
indicating strength, grade, thickness, type, and quality of the contents.

E. Glass shall be annealed, heat strengthened, fully tempered, or laminated, as

recommended by the glass manufacturer, to ensure against heat breakage and
to assure adequate glass performance at the specified design loads. The glass
manufacturer’s recommendations shall be accompanied by design load thermal
stress analysis calculations. Use of tempered glass shall be limited to areas
where design pressures are beyond the capacity of heat strengthened glass or
where required safety glazing. Heat strengthened glass shall be designed and
manufactured in a way to prevent loss of strength where fritting is applied.
F. Unless otherwise indicated, glass lights shall be of uniform appearance in each
curtain wall and façade system, in order to maintain visual uniformity
throughout the work. Glass required by code to meet safety glass requirements
is excepted from this requirement.
G. Glass thickness of all vertical lights in each curtain wall and façade system
shall be the same and shall based on design requirements for the most severe
condition.
H. Sizes of glass shall be taken from the actual frames or from guaranteed
dimensions provided by the frame supplier.
I. Tolerance between frame and edges of glass shall be those recommended by
the glass
J. The work shall conform to requirements applicable laws and regulations.
K. Glass 6 mm thick and thicker shall be factory graded and cut.
L. Design, furnish and install sealants joints, including expansion joints, in
accordance with design requirements, including those specified in related
sections, performance requirements, installation requirements, design intent,
and watertightness requirements.
M. Sealants used as weather seals shall not experience adhesive or cohesive
failure. Sealants shall withstand movements up to the limits requested by the
Engineer and prescribed by the manufacturer. Exposed sealant surface shall not
crack or bubble. Sealants and primers shall not stain adjacent materials.
N. Sealants shall not be adhered to, or placed against, the edge of a laminated

O. Sealants shall be supplied by a single manufacturer when available. After

acceptable by the Engineer, all sealant of each type shall be produced by the
accepted manufacturer.
1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Performance requirements for curtain wall glass are as follows:
1. Probability of breakage due to anticipated thermal stress in vertical glass
shall be nil.
2. Glass provided for a test mockup shall be identical (including strength) to
the glass provided for the corresponding zone on the building. Mockup glass
which breaks shall be replaced with the same type of glass, and the tests
continued. Repeated glass breakage shall constitute failure.
3. Laminated glass not delaminate, stain or discolor.
4. Glass is generally required to support up to 1.5 times design pressure
without breakage. It is recognized that any one glass can break at any pressure.
Therefore a limited amount of breakage of test mockup glass is acceptable,
providing that replacement glass with the same nominal strength eventually passes
all tests. Repeated glass breakage on the test mockup for pressure up to and
including 1.5 times design values is not acceptable.
5. Glass center deflection relative to glass edges at specified design wind and
live load pressure shall be limited to prevent disengagement from the frame.

6. Glass center deflection relative to glass at specified design wind and live
load pressures and deflection relative to glass edges specified design wind and live
load pressures and gravity load on sloped and horizontal glass shall not exceed
Engineer’s requirements. Glass deflection at 1.5 times design wind and live load
pressures shall be limited to prevent disengagement from the frame.
7. Glass shall not experience spontaneous breakage.
8. Glass shall be installed windtight and weathertight. The air permeability
per unit length of joints shall be less than 0.1 m3 /(h.m) for a pressure different of
10 Pa according to DIN 18055.
9. For ceramic frit printed interlayer custom dot patterns the tolerances shall
not exceed 0.2 mm for dot size and 1.0 mm for the distance between the centres of
