Slide 4
SDH introduced

• To overcome PDH shortcomings, ITU-T defined a new transmission standard:

The SDH Synchronous Digital Hierarchy to …

• access 2Mbit/s signals in any level of a datastream
• have an integrated network management channel with
routing functionality in every network element

• standardise the complete technology including

- frame formats,
- multiplexing schemes
- synchronisation

• allow bit-rates of up to 10 GBit/s in one signal

Slide 5

In addition to the transported data, SDH network element add

Overhead Bytes to transport information SDH functionality
STM-1: 155 Mbit/s (2000 channels)
STM-4: 622 Mbit/s (8000 channels)
STM-16: 2.5 Gbit/s (32000 channels)
STM-64: 10 Gbit/s (128000 channels)

Slide 6
WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing)
• SDH standard uses a single wavelength of 1310nm or 1550nm. Available
bandwidth can be increased by WDM.

• WDM works by combining and transmitting multiple signals simultaneously at

different wavelengths on the same fibre:
CDWM: Coarse WDM (up to 18 wavelengths)
DWDM: Dense WDM (up to 96 wavelengths)

• Currently, because of WDM, single fibers have been able to transmit data at
speeds up to 400Gb/s.

• Beside SDH, WDM-based networks can transmit data in IP, ATM, and Ethernet

• With SFP laser (small form-factor pluggables) “up-to-date SDH node” have
automatically WDM capabilities

EPSI1: the requirement for VRRP

• Hosts (e.g. RTU560) are not able to have

several default Gateways addresses
• High available communication networks
ask for redundancy on critical
components such as routers
• With VRRP two (2) physical routers can be
summarized to one virtual router
providing one gateway address towards
the hosts
• VRRP protocol takes care of main and
WAN standby router assignment
• Each physical VRRP router can participate
Virtual router in one or more virtual routers, and it can
192.168.10.50 be assigned as a virtual router master or

FOX615: Technical information
Requirements of protection applications
Protection applications have very high performance requirements on communication
channels

• Very high network availability

• Redundant channel routing

• Very fast switchover time from main to standby path

• No influence trough other services

• Very strict and predictable channel performance

• Low delay times (< 10 ms end to end)

• Very low asymmetrical delay times and delay time variations (specially for
Differential Protection)

• Always bidirectional communication channels

• High security and dependability requirements

Slide 84
