1. FIRE CONTROL AND SEARCHLIGHT EQUIPMENT

a. Fire Control Equipment. The fire
control equipment of the Sheridan pro
vides the crew with a 24-hour capability
of delivering effective fire on Threat
targets. The fire control system of the
Sheridan is divided into three major
categories—primary direct-fire controls, aux
iliary fire controls, and missile guidance and
controls. During periods of good visibility
(daylight) or when the target is illuminated
with visible illumination, i.e., white light, the
direct-fire sight (the telescope) is used along
with the direct-fire control system to engage
Threat targets with either missile or conven
tional ammunition. The direct-fire control
system is also used in conjunction with the
gunner's passive night sight (XM44 peri
scope) during the hours of darkness. During
periods of darkness or reduced visibility, such FIRE CONTROL

D (3) Missile guidance and control system. The basic function of the on-board guidance and
control system for the Shillelagh missile is to keep the missile on the gunner's line of sight
between the launching vehicle and the target until impact. To accomplish this, the guidance
and control system uses an infrared data link to measure the missile's deviation from the line of
sight and determines the required corrections. These corrections are transmitted to the missile
through the infrared data link. The guidance system on-board the missile corrects the missile
flight to reduce deviations. Measurements of the missile's deviation and transmission of
command signals are continuous. The components of the guidance and control system are:

2. WEAPONS
a. Main Gun. The M551 mounts a
152-mm gun/launcher, M81-series, which can
be electrically or manually operated and is
capable of launching the Shillelagh missile
and firing 152-mm combustible case
conventional ammunition. The flexibility of
this weapon permits destruction of a large
variety of targets. The HEAT-MP round is
employed against tank-like targets out to 800
meters. From 800 meters to 1,600 meters
either the HEAT-MP or missile can be
used, but the missile is the preferred
ammunition. Beyond 1,600 meters use
the missile only. The canister round is
effective against enemy personnel and unar
mored vehicles from muzzle to 400 meters.

b. Coaxially-mounted Machinegun. A
7.62-mm machinegun is mounted coaxially to

| the gun/launcher. The coax is employed

against personnel and light materiel targets
at ranges of 900 meters or less. In order to
conserve main gun ammunition, the
coax should be employed against all
targets within its effective range and
destruction capability.
c. Caliber .50 Machinegun. The cali
ber .50 machinegun, M2, HB, is mounted on
the commander's cupola. The caliber .50 is
employed against troops, lightly ar

In performing crew duties,

(1) The gunner must ensure that he
places his head in a good position in the
headrest, obtains a good sight picture on the
target, and maintains this sight picture
before, during, and after firing.
(2) For the first round fired, and subse
quent rounds which are adjusted by some
means other than burst on target (BOT), the
gunner should make the last movement of
this reticle up to the aiming point.
(3) Initial sight picture in precision
gunnery is target center of mass.
(4) When firing on moving targets, lead
is required. When the speed of a moving
target cannot be readily determined, the
gunner should apply a 7%-mil lead. If the
77/2 M1L LEAD speed of a moving target can be determined
the gunner should apply an initial lead of

- 7%-mils for targets moving at 11-15 mph

(17-24 kmph), a 5-mil lead for a target speed of
6-10 mph (16 kmph), and a 2%-mil lead for a
target speed of 1-5 mph (1-8 kmph), when
firing HEAT. A 5-mil lead should be applied
regardless of target speed, when firing the

º
5 MIL LEAD
coax. Experienced gunners may modify
these initial leads as required. Remember,
lead is measured from target center-of
mass, not its leading edge.
(5) The gunner must ensure that range
has been determined to the target by either
choking the target or applying the announced
range when the vehicle is equipped with the
laser rangefinder.
(6) The accuracy of range determined
with the stadia reticle depends on the train
ing of the gunner and his knowledge of the
length and width of Threat targets. Since
most Threat tanks are approximately 10 feet
wide and 20 feet long, the stadia lines in the
21/2 MIL LEAD reticle have been designed for these measure
ments. Range to targets with different
widths can also be determined with the stadia
lines by means described in (9) and (10).

a. Coaxial Machinegun.
(1) The coax may be employed against area, stationary, and moving point targets from a
moving vehicle when the stabilization system is in operation. When engaging area-type targets
with stabilization, the gunner will often find it necessary to use the “Z” firing pattern to ensure
coverage of the entire area.
(2) When stabilization is not used, area targets may be engaged on the move; however,
point targets should be engaged from a short halt.
(3) The initial lead for coaxial machinegun engagements is 5 mils.
(4) Adjustments to coax fire are given by the TC in the shortest possible terms, for example,
“DROP A LITTLE – RIGHT A LITTLE.” (
24
FM 17-12-5

(5) For coax fire, adjust tracers onto target. Remember, however, ball and tracer
ammunition do not have the same ballistic characteristics. Tracer rounds tend to fly higher
than ball rounds. When adjusting fire on an area target, this will not materially affect
accuracy. When engaging relatively small targets (1 meter or less in height) at ranges
less then 800 meters, adjust the tracer to hit the top of the target. When engaging
small targets at ranges in excess of 800 meters, adjust the tracer to hit the center of
the target. When the gunner can observe the impact of the ball ammunition, he should
adjust the impact of the ball rather than the tracer ammunition.
(6) The table below lists crew duties for coax engagements.

14. FIRING TABLES

The following pages provide detailed information for conducting

gunnery tables for the M551 ARAA.V. Chapter 20 of FM 17-12 provides
detailed guidance on timing and scoring procedures and should be read and
understood before proceeding with the gunnery table. Except as noted in the
following tables, timing and scoring procedures in chapter 20 apply to the
M551. Ammunition requirements for all firing tables follow table IX.
a. Tables II and III. Prior to conducting Tables II and III, the
examiner should fire the subcaliber device to determine the amount of
correction that should be used in his subsequent fire command.
b. Scaled Tables. Before these tables can be fired, the subcaliber
device used must be boresighted and zeroed. FM 17-12-7, Tank Gunnery
Devices, provides detailed guidance on scaled firing.
c. B Tables. On all tables where the tanks do not move, crews should
prepare range cards so that they can apply searchlight data to illuminate
targets and practice the technique of range card lay to direct fire.
d. Scoring Scales. Hit/time scales for scoring Tables IV thru VIII
are found following Table VIII. Scales for Tables VP and IX follow Table IX.

meter range point on the telescope (day)/periscope (night). To do
this, with the laser in CONTINUOUS mode, adjust the coax
mounting screws to move the laser beam to the 1,200-meter point
of aim on the zero target.
EXERCISES 2 and 3–MANIPULATION. TC issues initial fire command. Using
manual or power controls, gunner fires one round at each of ten
targets. He engages left silhouette then right silhouette, alternating
rounds between the two. Five targets in each silhouette are engaged
in this manner. Emphasis is on speed and accuracy.
/Vote. One additional round is allocated for exercise 3 at night to allow
crewman to confirm zero with the periscope before firing the
manipulation exercise. No points are awarded for this confirmation
round.

EXERCISE 4–RANGE CARD. Gunner lays on the top zeroing target and zeroes the
azimuth indicator. TC issues a fire command from prepared range
card data. Crewman applies range card data using auxiliary fire
controls to lay gun. Gunner fires one round at target without using
direct-fire sights.
EXERCISE 5–RANGE CARD LAY TO DIRECT FIRE. TC issues fire Command from
range card data. Gunner applies range card data, looks through sight,
identifies the target, and makes a precise lay. Upon the command
"FIRE," gunner engages the target.

ADJUSTMENT OF FIRE – STATIONARY TANK

EXERCISES 1 and 5–BOT. Examiner issues an initial fire command and induces a
+200 meter range error. Crewman uses telescope to lay and fire the
first round, which should miss the target. Crewman senses round and
applies burst on target with next round.
EXERCISES 2 and 6–BOT. Examiner introduces an elevation and deflection error in
telescope/periscope by rotating the boresighting knobs. He then
issues an initial fire command and crewman uses telescope to lay and
fire the first round, which should miss the target. Crewman senses
round and applies BOT with next round.
EXERCISE 3–RANGE CHANGE. Examiner introduces an elevation error into
telescope (day)/periscope (night) by rotating elevation boresight
knob. He then issues a fire command and the crewman uses his
telescope (day)/periscope (night) to lay and fire the first round, which
should miss the target. Examiner then issues a subsequent fire
command. Crewman applies announced range correction to sight
picture and fires a second round.
EXERCISE 4–SPECIAL TECHNIOUE. Examiner issues an initial fire command with a
+400 meter range error. Crewman uses telescope (day)/periscope
(night) to lay, simulates firing the first round, and announces
“LOST.” Examiner announces “LOST," then issues a subsequent
fire command using the special “LOST/LOST" range change
technique. Crewman applies announced range correction to sight
(
º

picture and fires.

EXERCISE 7–DEFLECTION CORRECTION. Examiner introduces a deflection error
into telescope (day)/periscope (night) by rotating deflection boresight
knob. He then issues a fire command and the crewman uses his
telescope (day)/periscope (night) to lay and fire the first round, which
should miss the target. Examiner then issues a subsequent fire
command. Crewman applies announced deflection correction to
sight picture and fires a second round.
EXERCISE 8–BATTLESIGHT. Examiner establishes 800-meter point of aim on
telescope (day)/periscope (night) by rotating the boresighting knobs so
that the original 1,200-meter aiming point is now the 800-meter
aiming point. The exercise will be fired with crew wearing NBC
protective equipment. Examiner issues a battlesight fire command.
Crewman aims at the base of target center, fires, and applies BOT, if
first round misses. If crewman is unable to apply BOT, the examiner
issues a subsequent fire command, and crewman applies announced
correction and fires a second round.

/Votes. 1. All exercises are conducted in the power mode.

Experienced gunners may combine exercises 3 and 7.

Examiner should fire the subcaliber device before conduct of
the table to determine the corrections needed for subsequent
fire commands. (

TABLE III (SUBCALIBER)

ADJUSTMENT OF FIRE–MOVING TARGETS

EXERCISE 1–BOT. Examiner issues an initial fire command with correct range
and announces “MOVING TANK" as description element.
Crewman tracks and leads target in stabilized mode, using the
telescope and power controls. He fires two rounds. The first round
should hit the target; if it does not, crewman applies BOT to fire
second round. Target must be hit with both rounds to obtain
maximum credit.

EXERCISE 2–BOT. This is the same as exercise 1, except non-stabilized, manual

mode of operation is used.
EXERCISE 3–RANGE CHANGE. Examiner induces a + 200 meter range error into
the telescope. This is accomplished by laying on a clearly defined
aiming point and using boresight knobs to move reticle until desired
range line is laid on aiming point. Examiner issues an initial fire
command, including “MOVING TANK" as description element.
Crewman tracks and leads target in the stabilized mode using the
telescope (day)/periscope (night). Crewman simulates firing the first
round and announces “LOST.” Examiner issues a subsequent fire
command to correct range error. Crewman applies correction and
fires. The second round (first actually fired) should hit the target; if it
does not, crewman applies BOT and fires again.
EXERCISE 4–RANGE CHANGE. This exercise is the same as exercise 3, except
non-stabilized, manual mode of operation is employed.
EXERCISE 5–BATTLESIGHT. Examiner establishes 800-meter point of aim on
telescope (day)/periscope (night) by rotating the boresight knobs so
that the original 1,200-meter aiming point is now the 800-meter
aiming point. The exercise will be fired with NBC protective
equipment. Examiner issues a battlesight fire command. Crewman
aims at base of target, applies initial lead, and fires. Crewman
applies BOT if first round misses. If crewman is unable to apply BOT,
the examiner issues a subsequent fire command, and crewman
applies announced correction and fires second round. To obtain
maximum credit, both rounds must hit the target.

Wotes. 1. Hit times are recorded during conduct of the table. Scoring is figured using the scales following Table VIII.
. After the subcaliber device is zeroed, the 800m range line of the telescope/periscope is referred to the strike of the
confirmation round, when firing battlesight engagements. All other engagements will be fired at 1,200m range line.
3. Engagement time starts when stationary pop-up targets are activated or when moving targets appear.
. If the first round is sensed as a target hit, a second round is not fired. No additional points awarded for a second round
hit if a first round hit was obtained.

. Ranges shown are actual combat ranges to targets. Target emplacement ranges depend on the scale range used (see
FM 17-12, chapter 20).
. Flare illumination is possible using hand fired white star clusters, parachute flares, or the Beale flare simulation
device (see FM 17-12-7). Units must experiment with placement of flares to ensure the gunner is not blinded and that
the flare illuminates only the desired target(s).
. Using searchlight illumination on this table requires a slotted cardboard mask to adjust beam width and placement
(see FM 17-12-7, p4).
. Exercise 7–Range Card Lay to Direct Fire. The crew has a maximum of 1 minute to load the weapon and apply range
card data prior to target illumination.
9. Exercises 2 and 6 are multiple target exercises. Both targets appear simultaneously.
. Exercise 4 will be fired with the crew wearing NBC protective equipment.

TABLE VP (SUBCALIBER)
STATIONARY PLATOON.—STATIONARY/MOVING TARGETS

The exercises in this table can be run by a light armor platoon or the Sheridan section of an armored
cavalry platoon in either offensive or defensive situations or a combination thereof. The examples which
follow illustrate a standard armored cavalry platoon. For the offense, movement is simulated by
positioning and activating targets. For example, exercise 1 (see score card), might follow this scenario.
An armored cavalry platoon is advancing to contact (simulated). The overwatching elements are
suppressing likely Threat target areas with simulated machinegun or mortar fires. Mortar suppression
can be realistically simulated using the M32 pneumatic mortar trainer. Six of the nine targets of exercise
1 are activated and engaged by the overwatch elements. The moving elements (simulated) join the
engagement. The remaining three targets are then activated and engaged by either the elements in
overwatch or the elements simulating movement.
For the defense, the exercise is controlled by positioning the firing cavalry platoon elements, using
terrain and vegetation in the target area or placing targets so that all or only part of the platoon sees the
target array. Units deployed overseas should lay out the range to resemble the terrain in front of the
preselected battle positions in which they would be expected to fight. The following is an example of how
exercise 3 (see score card) might be fired. An armored cavalry platoon is occupying a defensive position
with elements mutually supporting one another. Its mission is to conduct an active defense. Three of the
nine targets in exercise 3 are activated. The first element that acquires the target fires. Other elements
join the engagement per platoon SOP or the platoon leader's command. The remaining six targets of the
exercises are then activated requiring the platoon leader to adjust fires. Using the M32 pneumatic
mortar trainer in the situations described above gives the platoon/section leader practice in calling for
and controlling supporting fires.
Typical limited visibility engagement scenarios are presented below. These scenarios can be
applied to any of the exercises.

SCENARIO 1: The platoon leader is given target data from a radar section or an OP. The platoon
leader designates a specific searchlight tank, and its crew applies range card data to tank auxiliary fire
controls and reports ready. The platoon leader directs a searchlight to illuminate and directs the
remainder of the platoon to engage targets. Time starts on effective illumination. Daylight time scales
apply.

SCENARIO 2: The platoon leader is eliminated from the exercise and the platoon sergeant takes
control of the platoon. The platoon sergeant gives a platoon fire command and each tank applies range
card data to tank auxiliary fire controls and reports ready. The platoon sergeant gives the command to
fire, searchlights illuminate, and firing tanks use range card lay to direct fire techniques.
SCENARIO 3: The loader of one tank observes the target. His tank commander is required to give a
spot report to the platoon leader. The remainder of the exercise follows as described in scenario 2.

SCENARIO 4. Both the platoon leader and the platoon sergeant are killed. All tanks are operational
with at least three-man crews. A TC is selected to take over either the platoon leader or platoon
sergeant's role and use a tank with dual radio capability. The exercise continues as in scenario 2. Time
starts with the new platoon leader's fire command. The crew from which the TC is selected must fight as
a three-man crew.

Wotes. 1. At night one element may illuminate and the other element may fire. Alternate as required.

. Available equipment should permit five different sets of ten targets each to be emplaced in the target area. To
increase Threat odds against the firing platoon, any number of targets (up to 50) can be activated simultaneously,
. To simulate friendly losses, a tank commander can be instructed to elevate his main gun tube between exercises,
thus eliminating that tank from the exercise,
. Each tank will load subcaliber ammunition equivalent to its basic combat load (main gun rounds). No extra rounds
will be allocated or fired. Ammunition expenditure should not exceed the amount of ammunition normally
available in the ready rack; therefore, time should be taken to replenish the ready racks based on ammunition fired.
. Allocate 70 seconds during night engagements for the platoon leader to issue his “READY REPORT" fire
command and receive a “READY" from all tanks. If the platoon leader has not commanded “FIRE" within 70
seconds of receiving notification of a target, the examiner should start the timing of the engagement. Lack of
training or the lack of a sense of urgency is then penalized. A notation should be made if time was started by
examiner before all tanks were ready to fire (70 sec rule) and how much time elapsed before platoon initiated the
engagement.

) FM 17-12-5

6. Ranging with the laser rangefinder has no effect on the fire control system. However, to ensure the TC's
proficiency in ranging, the laser rangefinder should be employed when targets are between 200 and 300 meters.
Since targets on the 1/60- and 1/35-scale ranges are within 200 meters the tank commander will announce the
simulated range to the gunner.
7. To provide flare illumination on scale ranges, hand fired parachute flares or the Beale flare simulation device
should be employed (see FM 17-12-7).
8. White light and IR illumination can be simulated by covering the searchlight with cardboard or some other suitable
material and cutting a one-half-inch hole in the left or right corner of the searchlight covering. The amount of light
emitted is dependent upon the size of the hole in the covering.
9. Engagement time starts when stationary pop-up targets are activated or when moving targets appear. Elements
continue to engage until all targets are destroyed or until the total time allotted for each exercise expires (see
hit/time scales following Table IX).
10. Regardless of the number of times a target is hit, the maximum score for each target is 10 points.
11. A number of exercises can be run simultaneously in order to increase the Threat odds against the firing platoon.
12. White light engagements will be scored on the day scale .
13. When the subcaliber device is used to simulate missile firing, the Beale Shillelagh Scaled Range Device is
recommended because of the built-in time delay feature (see FM 17-12-7).
14. Exercise 7 will be conducted with crew wearing NBC protective equipment.

Wotes. 1. During conduct of the table, hit times are recorded. Scoring is accomplished using the hit/time scales following
Table VIII.

2. Exercise 1 (main gun) is fired at night only. At the conclusion of the daylight exercises, each firing tank will make
up a range card for at least three targets. Tanks will back out of the prepared and marked positions. Firing tanks
will have 5 minutes to move into the prepared position and fire the first round. Time starts at the end of the 5
minute preparation time; at that time the target should be effectively illuminated.
3. Exercises 1 thru 4 (main gun) and exercises 1, 2, 3, and 5 (machinegun) are stationary targets, all other exercises
are moving target engagements. When adequate facilities exist, stationary and moving target engagements
should be mixed. To ensure crew chooses proper engagement technique, exercises 2 thru 7 (main gun) and
exercises 1 thru 5 (machinegun) need not be fired in sequence.
4. If the first main gun round is sensed as a target hit, second round will not be fired. No additional points are
awarded for second round hit if a first round hit was obtained.

5. Exercise 5 (main gun) is fired simultaneously with exercise 5 (machinegun). Both targets appear simultaneously.
The main gun target is engaged first and scored as other main gun engagements. The caliber .50 target is scored
per machinegun scoring scale; however, time starts 10 seconds after the main gun engagement is initiated.
6. Exercise 6 will be fired with the crew wearing NBC protective equipment.

7. At night two or three exercises should be initiated using range card lay to direct fire technique.

Wotes. 1. During conduct of the table, hit times are recorded. Scoring is then accomplished using the scales following Table
VIII.

2. Time for all exercises starts when the target appears or is designated, unless otherwise specified.
3. Exercise 2a and 2b is a multiple target engagement with both targets appearing simultaneously. At night, one
illumination mission should illuminate both targets.
4. Exercise 3 will be fired on the move.

Exercise 4 (main gun) and exercise 5 (machinegun) will be fired with the crew wearing NBC protective equipment.
6. Exercise 6 (main gun) is fired at night only. At the conclusion of the daylight exercises, each firing tank will make up a
range card for at least three targets. Tanks will back out of the prepared and marked positions. Firing tanks will have
5 minutes to move into the prepared position and fire the first round. Time starts at the end of the 5-minute
preparation time; at that time the target should be effectively illuminated.
7. Upon depletion of main gun ammunition stored in the turrets, crew must replenish turret stock with ammunition
stored in driver's compartment.

Notes. 1. During conduct of the table, hit times are recorded. Scoring is then accomplished using the scales following this
table.

. Exercise 2 (main gun) is fired at night only. At the conclusion of the daylight exercises, each firing tank will make
up a range card for at least three targets. Tanks will back out of the prepared and marked positions. Firing tanks
will have 5 minutes to move into the prepared position and be prepared to fire the first round. Time starts at the
end of the 5-minute preparation time; at that time the target should be effectively illuminated for the crew to
engage the target.
. To ensure variable target sequence, machinegun exercises should be interspersed with main gun engagements.
4. Time for all exercises starts when the target appears or is designated, unless otherwise specified.
Emphasis is on achieving a target hit in the shortest possible time. Bonus points are given for ammunition
conservation, and second round is not fired if the first round hits.

. One missile engagement may be fired (exercise 1), either day or night.
Exercise 6 will be fired with the crew wearing NBC protective equipment.
. Exercise 4 is a multiple engagement with both targets appearing simultaneously. Whenever feasible, the targets
should be at different ranges. To ensure variable target sequence, machinegun exercises should be interspersed
with main gun engagements.
9. Exercise 3 will be fired on the move

Exercise 5 (main gun) is run at the same time as exercise 3 (machinegun). Both targets must be presented
simultaneously. The main gun target is engaged first and scored as other main gun engagements. A caliber .50
target will also be presented and is engaged per machinegun scoring table; however, time starts 10 seconds after
the main gun engagement is initiated.
11. For this qualification course, two HEAT-T-MP rounds have been allocated for zero confirmation (1 round for day,
telescope; 1 round night, periscope).
12. Upon depletion of main gun ammunition stored within the turret, the crew must replenish turret ammunition with
ammunition stored in driver's compartment. This may not be necessary, depending upon total first round hits.
13. Crew duties are not scored.

TABLE IX A, B
PLATOON BATTLE RUN

OFFENSE/DEFENSE

Type engagements shown on the score sheet are based on an expenditure of

1 training missile, 8 TP-T, 250 rounds of 7.62-mm, and 200 caliber .50 rounds
per M551. If more or less rounds are available, number of targets may be
adjusted accordingly.
This table is designed for three, five, or six M551's based on the type series
MTOE applicable to the theater of operation, i.e., three per platoon in Korea;
three or five per platoon in CONUS, six in European 3 × 5 platoon. The number
of targets shown in the exercises must be matched to the element conducting
the table. For example, in exercise 1 (offense), a 3 × 5 platoon would have four
rounds to fire on two moving tank targets; a CONUS platoon would have two
rounds to fire against one moving tank target. (For force ratios, see FM 17-12,
para 20-5.) Platoons will fire both offensive and defensive exercises to complete
the battle run. The offense may be conducted during the day, and the defense at
night.

Commanders must prepare the tactical scenario based on their terrain, the
way the exercises are sequenced, and local safety requirements. The tanks are
not always outnumbered because the offensive force should have numerical
superiority. Commanders should designate at least one battlesight exercise as a
stabilized engagement. Commanders should designate one of the suppressive
fire engagements during the offense as an NBC environment and require all
crews to wear NBC protective equipment.
Points for target hits are awarded regardless of which tank(s) destroyed the
target. Total point values are based on the number of M551's, number of
targets, and number of exercises. For example, in a 3 × 5 platoon, only 3 of the 6
tanks may be able to identify and engage a battlesight target, and the force ratio
is based on 3 tanks not 6. If modification of number of engagements or number
of targets is necessary, then a corresponding change to total points is required.
Ammunition conservation is based on maximum credit for using only one
conventional round to destroy each main gun target. Platoons are given 10
points for each round turned in after conducting offensive and defensive
exercises.

TABLE IX C
PLATOON BATTLE RUN (SUBCALIBER)
Type engagements shown on score sheet are based on each M551's basic
load of main gun ammunition, i.e., 9 missiles and 20 conventional rounds. For
machinegun engagements each tank is authorized 250 rounds each cal .50 and
7.62-mm ammunition. This includes 50 rounds for each weapon for a function
check prior to firing Table IXC.
Commander should design a tactical scenario to require the platoon to
displace to different battle positions during conduct of the defensive exercise.
:| Some exercises should be fired with crews wearing NBC protective equipment.
Exercises may be divided into section engagements as the tactical scenario
dictates. At least one platoon exercise should be retained, requiring the platoon
to engage targets in the likely engagement area.
Since tank-to-target ranges shown are beyond maximum effective range of
the subcaliber device, use of scaled targets (at corresponding scale ranges) is
required. The subcaliber device and telescope should be boresighted and zeroed
at the appropriate scaled 1,200 meter range. (See FM 17-12-7, Tank Gunnery
Devices.) The Beale Shillelagh Scaled Range Simulation Device is recommended
for simulating missile fire because of the built-in time delay feature.
Points for target hits are awarded regardless of which tank(s) destroyed the
target. Total point values are based on the number of M551's, number of targets,
and number of exercises. If modification of number of engagements or number of
targets is necessary, then a corresponding change to total points is required. To
score this table, use scoring procedures outlined for Table IX (live fire) and FM
17-12, chap 20, para 20-5.

For simulated missile engagements one subcaliber round is allocated per

target; two rounds per target for conventional engagements. Ammunition
conservation is based on maximum credit for using only one subcaliber round to
destroy each main gun target. Platoons are given 10 points for each round turned
in after conducting offensive and defensive exercises.
