SHADING DEVICES:
• Horizontal shading devices protect from sun at high angles and opposite to the wall to be
shaded such as North and South sides.
• Vertical shading devices protect from sun at sides of the elevation such as East and West
side.
• A combination of horizontal and vertical shading devices protects from sun in all orienta-
tions.
• For the 14’ high space, the Eave depth should be at least 4’6” for the best shading.
• Evergreen trees combined with a wall, fence, of earth berm can deflect or lift the wind
over.
• Located the enclosed spaces at the North/North-West side can help avoid the Winter
winds.
• Having small horizontal/vertical openings can help control Winter winds.
• Strategies for Sun Management • Roof pitches of 3:12, 4:12, 5:12, or 6:12 work best for metal buildings in snow country.
• Strategies for Snow Management • If do a sloped roof, the roof pitches should be no less than 1:12
• A simple gable roof is strong and sturdy, and sheds snow easily.
• Avoid openings in the roof or just do it with caution and for a reason.
• Using Gutter and Downspouts
MATERIAL:
• Metal roofs are the most durable option, sheds snow with ease and rarely spring a leak.
• Asphalt shingles also stand up well in harsh winters and are less costly to repair
• Other materials should be chosen with care.
