INTRODUCTION

The suspension system is all about 3 C’s-

 Contact
 Control
 Comfort

The Shock absorber is a Suspension system which designed

mechanically to control shock impulse and dissipate kinetic
energy. It reduces the amplitude of disturbances leading to
increase in comfort and improved ride quality. Shock absorber
minimizes the effect of traveling on a rough ground. Now-a-
days Modern vehicles come along with strong shock absorbers
to tolerate any type of bouncy conditions. If supposedly shock
absorber is not used then to control excessive suspension
movement, stiffer springs will be used. The suspension system
of an automobile is one which separates the wheel assembly
from the body. The vehicles end use (e.g. use as a formula one
race car , an off-road buggy or a luxury vehicle) solely
determines the manner in which the suspension designer
prioritises the different damping characteristics.
VISION
To become a department recognized for academic excellence
and research, capable of making contribution to engineering
community as per the present and future need and objectives
of the society.

MISSION
To develop capability adequate for imparting the state-of-the-
art education in mechanical engineering, enabling the student
to take up the academic, applied and research-oriented
challenges, thereby generating professional and enterprising
human resources, capable of sustaining and shaping industries
and society.
OBJECTIVES:-

a) To find out the dynamic characteristics of shock absorber .

b) To measure the damping coefficient of a spring damper

system.

METHODOLOGY:-

1. CAD Model Generation

We will first make the CAD model of our spring

damper tester.
2. On the basis CAD model after manufacturing of actual
model the testing procedure is as follows-

 Mounting the damper:

Mounting the Damper: The lower end of a Damper is
vertically fixed to the crank piston arrangement and
the upper end is fixed to the rigid beam equipped
with a load cell to sense force. The Damper is
adjusted vertically to ensure that piston does not
produce eccentric movement during the loading
process. Initial position of the hydraulic actuator is
then adjusted to ensure the piston is in the middle of
the effective stroke.

 Loading the damper:

The loading of the damper is done by rotating the
crank at a given speed provided with the help of DC
motor. This rotation is converted into linear
displacement with the help of slider crank
mechanism.

 Data acquisition:
Data regarding position (displacement) , velocity and
Force is measure with the help of various sensors .
Various sensors used are-
1. Load cell: connected at the fixed end of the damper.
This load cell measures the magnitude of the force
transmitted to the fixed member.
2. LVDT: it will measure the displacement of the slider end of
Damper.
3. Accelerometer: It will measure velocity by manipulating
the acceleration.

 Interpretation of acquired data

Two curves are plotted with the acquired data.
a. Force versus frequency ratio .
b. Force versus velocity.
With the help of the (a) curve transmissibility at
different frequencies are determined. With the help
of curve (b) damping coefficient of the system is
determined.
