Power Conditioning & Distribution Unit

SPACE

Based on the requirements for the ESA Galileo The BDR modules provide the discharge regulation for one
spacecraft Terma has developed and qualified the Power common Li-Ion battery. The BDR modules provide as well a
Conditioning and Distribution Unit (PCDU) with the voted battery charge regulation control and a cell balancing
following special properties: function for the battery.

• Regulated 50 volt, up to 3000 watt power bus The bus voltage is regulated by a voted set of Main Error
Amplifiers, regulating all nine power modules in a 3-domain
• Low mass of 16.3 kg
characteristic and providing an excellent load transient
• High power transfer efficiency performance and very low bus impedance.

The power bus is provided to external interfaces by

The unit is built in the power module technology developed protected power distribution functions, for spacecraft
by Terma for the Rosetta mission. It comprises of the equipments, heater, propulsion control and thermal knives
following module types: activation.

• (3) Shunt Regulator (S3R / S4R) All PCDU functions can be commanded and monitored via
two independent dual MIL-STD-1553 interfaces. All
• (4) Battery Discharge Regulation (BDR)
adjustable control parameters, protections and switch
• (3) Equipment Power Distribution (EPD) function settings can be uploaded and reset from ground
control.
• (6) Heater Power Distribution (HPD)
• (1) Propulsion Power Distribution (PPD) Each of the applied power modules is a self contained
function able to initialize and start up providing bus power
• (2) Thermal Knives Actuation (TKA) whenever energy is available on either solar arrays or
batteries. The system will recover autonomously from any
• (2) Command and Monitoring (CM) single point failure without any bus power interruption.
• (1) Back plane module
