PINGGANG PINOY

WHAT IS PINGGANG PINOY?

The Pinggang Pinoy is a nutrition tool for preparing healthy food on a per meal
basis. It was developed by the Department of Science and Technology’s Food and
Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI).
Pinggang Pinoy, literally translated as Filipino Plate, is a visual representation of
what a person should consume on a per meal basis. It is a plate-based food guide that
features the right proportion of food that contains the right nutrients needed by the body
of an average Filipino. It is a new, easy to understand food guide that uses a familiar
food plate model to convey the right food group proportions on a per-meal basis, to
meet the body’s energy and nutrient needs of Filipino adults.
The Pinggang Pinoy aims to complement and not replace the existing Daily
Nutritional Guide (DNG) Pyramid. It is an effort to translate the recommended portions
to household measures. The Pinggang Pinoy can be used side by side with the
existing DNG Pyramid for Filipinos but it will not replace it. According to FNRI,
Pinggang Pinoy is a quick and easy guide on how much to eat per mealtime, while the
DNG Pyramid shows at a glance the whole day food intake recommendation.

COMPONENTS OF THE PINGGANG PINOY:

The Pinggang Pinoy includes the three food groups called Go, Grow and Glow
because these terms describe the function of each food group in the body.

 Go or energy-giving foods, such as rice, grains and other starches, provide

energy to keep one going throughout the day.

RICE
It is important to eat Rice because it contains very low amount of sodium,
hence, it helps in controlling high blood pressure. Rice is an excellent source of
healthy fibre. These help in the growth of beneficial bacteria that improve
digestion and regularize the bowel movement.

BREAD
Eating whole grains, on the other hand, is a sound weight loss strategy. In
one study, people on a lower-calorie diet that included whole grains, such as
whole wheat bread, lost more belly fat than those who ate only refined grains,
such as white bread and white rice.

 Grow or body-building foods, such as meat, fish, dairy and eggs, provide the
protein and minerals necessary for the growth and repair of tissues, muscles and
bones.
MILK
It is important to drink milk especially Cow's milk because it is a source of
calcium, a mineral that is important in the development and maintenance of
healthy bones and teeth. Milk is good for the bones because it offers a rich
source of calcium, a mineral essential for healthy bones and teeth. Milk also
contains Calcium and vitamin D which help prevent osteoporosis.

FISH
White-fleshed fish, in particular, is lower in fat than any other source of
animal protein, and oily fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, or the "good" fats.
Since the human body can't make significant amounts of these essential
nutrients, fish are an important part of the diet.

CHICKEN
While chicken is a lean meat with loads of proteins, it is also high on
cholesterol. Of 100gms, 27gms would be only protein which is important for
growth and development of various organs in the body. Besides, chicken also
helps in maintaining the desired body weight.

 Glow or body-regulating foods, such as fruits and vegetables, provide the

vitamins and minerals to maintain healthy body functions, as well as fiber for
healthy digestion.

BANANA
It is important to eat one banana for it can provide nearly 10 percent of
your daily fiber requirement. Vitamin B6 can also help protect against type 2
diabetes and aid in weight loss, according to Flores. In general, bananas are a
great weight loss food because they taste sweet and are filling, which helps curb
cravings.

APPLES
On the other hand, Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants,
flavanoids, and dietary fiber. The phytonutrients and antioxidants in apples may
help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart
disease. This article provides a nutritional profile of the fruit and its possible
health benefits.

EGGPLANTS
Eating eggplants is important for it can promote blood sugar control.
Adding eggplants to your diet may help keep your blood sugar in check. This is
primarily because eggplants are high in fiber, which passes through the
digestive system intact.
