Group 01 // Intercultural Management

Second Minterm

In terms of intercultural management, we put in perspective a lot of terms that can lead us
to a simple organization of studies categorizing cultures, and the behavior between each
other.

When we talk about monocultural studies or single cultural studies, we look to identify the
line that separates a culture to another, as its name claims, only studies are done to get to
know a single culture from the deepest roots to what normal behavior is, and how this
culture interacts with others, in terms of how eater of the cultures can get an impact.

Cross-cultural studies on the other hand, base its studies on the comparisons between two
or more cultures. It is important to high light that cross-cultural studies try to put on the
table certain phenomena that might affect these cultures in the deepest development of its
cultures in individual. The way a culture manages to do “something” in comparison to how
x, y, z, can or manage to do it as well and if both or more cultures, have adapted to getting
that thing done mixing knowledge.

It is interesting how intercultural studies, tents to be confused with cross-cultural studies

because of the natures of their behavior. Intercultural studies, however, studies the main
point of the interaction between cultures. The good, the bad and the process of interaction.
To focus on intercultural studies, its basically how on the interpersonal, personal or group
levels aspects, can get affected by others.

These three studies mark an important perspective of how intercultural management has
been a huge open door for cultures to get the best of another one in the “best” transactional
way possible. One can say that the main challenges in intercultural management these days
have been genially in decrease, however, even in century XXI, main and radical cultural
differences can conclude in broken relationships in many different levels either personal as
person or as nation; to enterprises, business related or not governmental organizations and
even in the international system. Rules, traditions and cultural background play a very
important role in how the world roll every day, the way the connections are made and how
this can be beneficial for the parts.

In our class, we were able to interact with two very opposite cultures, Russians and
America, who we know by culture, they are very opposite. Russian people on the first hand,
were very open to work, talk and exchange experiences; they were very open with us and
tried to make the most of this experience with Colombian people. Students from the US
were also friendly and open minded, taking into consideration that they were the closes to
us by the amount of information being exchanged during class and in normal live. It was a
very fulfilling class, because of the prejudices and stereotypes we had from both cultures
and having the chance of clarifying them was an eye-opening experience.

As a conclusion, we can say that this all world in cultural terms is being easily connected
these days, the way that we as younger generations are very open minded and how more
radical cultures are giving a chance to unknown paths to follow in so many different ways.
Having the experiences with Russia and America we can relate that in both scenarios they
were very kind and open to speak abut things that might have not been a good idea to talk
years before. We ended up understanding what they thought about us and how that picture
might have change in the good away and as for us, we were able to tear down some cultural
walls that were built by extern medias.

In the book of the cannon, “Animal farm” we can see in firsthand how cooperation can lead
to big changes, either good or bad. To put a little bit in context, these animals in the farm
had to team work to accomplish a goal: get humans out of the farm, in this way they would
be able to “get free” but what is very mind blowing is that right after they accomplish their
main goal, things get much worse between each other.

This book is the maximum expression of how being cooperative, even when your
background is different, can lead you to have huge goals but also how the way of making
this happen can carry important impact in cultures. This is often seen on international
interactions, the good team work can lead nations to improve and develop the power and
the good mange to help others in need but also how bad decisions and power can be
corrupted in the wrong hands.
