IMPLEMENTATION OF VERTICAL GARDENING IN

STRUCTURE AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this dissertation is to reveal the importance of
vertical gardens. Urbanisation is very serious problem which causes
many environmental problems like population increase and more
concrete areas. Due to very less space in cities the scope for
maintaining a garden is very difficult. In such situation, the vertical-
gardens help in combining the natural environment with urban
space. They not only bring the element of beauty, but also
integration with nature, using them in wilder extent could also have
positive impact on city’s micro climate
The presented report contains a general description of vertical
greening systems and their behaviour in relation to air quality
improvement, asthetics, energy saving, bio-diversity, mitigation of the
urban heat island effect and sound insulation.
Towards the end a design proposal is provided on an existing office
building . Also a comparision among types of vertical gardens and few
recommendations are mentioned.
The study concludes that with environmental issues being at their
highest in dense urban areas, taking into consideration the importance
of vertical gardens is an effective solution for many tackling situations.

CHAPTER -1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND :

The increment growth of Urbanisation, consuming vast quantity

of natural vegetation and replacing them with the concrete
buildings and low albedo surfaces. This results change in thermal
properties of surface materials and lack of evaporisation in urban
area lead to phenomenon known as Urban Heat Island Effect (UHI).
With the idea of introducing the nature back to the Urban
landscape to strengthen the relation creates a newsustainable
urban lifestyle . Greenery is the key factor and element for this
transformation. Since the outer surface in urban buildings offer
great amount of space for vegetation, planting on roofs, walls will
be an innovative idea to promote ecology, horticulture in the built
environment.
This greening of the facade is called as “VERTICAL GARDEN”.
This implementation increases air quality improves human health
and well being, also cool and insulate interiors reducing the cost of
air-conditioning.
This assist in the educating the public as well as professionals
and acknowledging , accepting vertical gardens as sustainable
solution.

1.2 AIM :
The aim is to study vertical gardens as a method to increase green
spaces in urban areas to ensure healthy environment and better
quality of life.

1.3 SCOPE :

This dissertation focuses on vertical gardens to analyze general

perspective of its abilities, benefits, impacts and its need to
provide environmental friendly functions at both building and
urban scales.

1.5 OBJECTIVE :
 To give a brief overview on vertical gardens and the history over
the past century.
 To study the benefits amd different approaches to green walls.
 To refer various case studies to reflect on thr performance of
green walls.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS :

 TYPES OF VERTICAL GARDEN AND TYPES OF PLANTS TO BE USED ?
 WHAT ARE ADVANTAGES AND DIS-ADVANTAGES OF VERTICAL
GARDENING ?
 WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF VERTICAL GARDENING ON THE BUILT
ENVIRONMENT ?
