The guidance and counseling program aims to support students as they grow in
understanding and constructively dealing with intrapersonal and inter-personal
challenges. It involves a proactive approach that includes support of wellness and and
life-skill curricula:

 a school wide emphasis on the qualities of sound character.

 a school wide focus on fostering culture of learning through the community
building process.

SCHOOL COUNSELOR

What is a School Counselor?

A school counselor is a counselor and educator who

works in schools, and have historically been referred to
as “guidance counselor”, although “school counselor” is
now the preferred term.

 School Counselors are professionals who believe

that all students are lifelong learners. The

Counseling Program is designed to promote academic, personal / social and

career development for all students.

 School counselor are dedicated individuals who assist students and parents in
building a foundation for academic excellence through support, interventions and
positive relationship between school and home.
 Counselor is a guide who creates a safe environment for learning and practicing
assertive, clear communication, conflict resolution and problem solving.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

Counseling in schools includes a wide variety of activities and services. The

following list will describe the services of a school counseling program.

 INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING – School counselors provide individual sessions

for students to help with educational and personal concern.
 GROUP COUNSELING – Students help each other by working in a small
groups with leadership from the counselor. Students share ideas about
issues such as problem solving, educational planning, and peer
relationships.
 GROUP GUIDANCE – Counselors meet with groups to help students learn
information about themselves. Groups can be small or large and are
instructional. Topics focus on self-concept, study skills, friendship, or good
citizenship.
 STUDENT APPRAISAL – Counselors help students, parents and teachers
by collecting information about student abilities, behaviors and achievements
so decisions can be made about educational placement and instructions.
 REFERRAL – Counselors are referral agents who help students and their
families receive assistance from other programs and services in the school
system and from agencies.
 CONSULTATION – Counselors consult with teachers and parents to plan
appropriate service for every child for their individual needs
 COORDINATION – Counselors coordinate services and activities for smooth
administration. An example would be the coordination standardized testing
schedule.

WHAT IS COUNSELING?

Counseling is a process involving a relationship between two people who are

meeting so that one person can help other to resolve a problem. Counseling is also
an interaction between students and school professional in which thoughts and
feelings are explored in confidence.

The focus is place on the students and their understanding of the world
around them. The goal of counseling is to help students grow in understanding
themselves and others.

DEVELOPMENTAL GUIDANCE – Comprehensive program that foster intervention

within educational and human services programs to facilitate and stimulate the total
development of all students. It strives for growth and personal, social, career,
ethical, cognitive and aesthetic domains into an individual’s lifestyle.

CHILDREN’S INFORMATIONS THAT IS NECESSARY TO LISTEN IN

COUNSELING SESSIONS:

QUALITIES AND BEHAVIORS OF EFFECTIVE COUNSELORS

The counselor’s attitude and skills are very important to the quality of the counseling
relationship. The qualities and behaviors present in very effective counselors are as
follows;

 Intellectual Competence – counseling requires a person to have

adequate knowledge of many different areas. This involves searching
data to make informed decisions about choice and progress of
students.
 Energy– counseling is emotionally demanding. When dealing with
problems counselors are likely to feel emotionally drained and
physically fatigued. Being dynamic produces student confidence and a
willingness to work.
 Flexibility – Effective counselors are not tied to a single method of
work. The question they ask is “Which technique will work best for this
particular student?
 Support – The student experiences the fact that here is someone who
respects him as he is.
 Good Will – The counselor’s motives and intentions are positive and
constructive rather than negative and destructive.
 Self-awareness – all our feeling and thought influence the way we
handle certain things in the counseling relationship.

ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGES OF A SCHOOL COUNSELOR

In school counseling there are both advantage and disadvantages of the job.
The main advantage you get is to touch the life of a child.

 You are able to reach out and help someone solve a problem or feel good
about him or herself. This is very important because it helps the student
grow emotionally and be ready for more challenging events.
 You have the opportunity to work with a variety of professionals who all are
concerned about the welfare of the child.

The main disadvantage of school counseling is that it is both emotionally and

physically draining. Counseling itself can become very difficult because you are
listening to the problems of others everyday and many times there can be no
solution. ”Dealing daily with these problems can cause stress.”

 You work with many people. The principal, vice principals, teachers, parents
and students all demand time and attention from you.

SIX SPECIFIC ROLES AND FUNCTIONS OF SCHOOL COUNSELORS

 Program Planning – When planning a school counseling program,

counselors conduct needs assessments of their particular school’s strength
and weaknesses. Collection of data that illustrate which services are effective
and which program areas need to be changed.

 Counseling (groups and individuals) – School counselors provide a

confidential helping relationship to help students with educational, personal,
social, and career concerns. Group of students who have similar concerns come
together to share, listen and resolve concerns.

 Consulting- Counselors consult with parents, teachers, and others to

determine the most appropriate ways to help students. School counselors often
refer to students to public and private agencies and practitioners outside the
school who can meet their needs on a long-term basis.

 Coordinating- Counselors assist with school wide programs that help schools in
their educational mission. This programs include school-wide efforts that reach a
specific group of students.

 Student’s Appraisal and Assessment- Counselors use strategies to assist in

this area such as; helping students plan their educational program, interpreting
test data with teachers to make appropriate decisions about academic
placement, and sharing occupational information with students.

 Professional Development- Counselors must stay current in their profession

through counselor development workshops, conferences and through web-
based site support.
Increasingly, counselors must know about the use technology based programs
and software that help the students access and use information pertinent to their
exploration and development.

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING PROGRAM

 Classroom Guidance Activity – it is offered for students within their classroom

setting. Topics for this developmental guidance sessions include: understanding
self and others communication skills; relational and social skills; anger
management; coping with conflict and career awareness.

 Small Group Counselling – the counselor works with small group of students
to develop competencies in certain areas such as school adjustment, study
skills, anger management, and improving peer relations. Specific groups are
formed to address a certain area such as divorce, self-concept, and new
orientation.

 Individual Counseling- help is given in developing more positive attitudes and

behaviors. Reaching potential, getting along with others, and coping with
difficulties that may interfere with school success are among common topics of
counseling. It helps students assume responsibility for goal setting, decision
making and development of problem solving skills.

 Parent Conferences- parents are encouraged to call the counselor about

student or school concerns. The counselor is also available during the regularly
scheduled parent-conference times.

 Consultation – consultation among the counselor/ teacher/ parents is the norm

for initiating dialogue and continuing follow through student’s needs, concern
and progress.

 Community Resources - the counselor can provide information to families

about agencies in the community where help can be found when the need
arises. The counselor and all school personnel are obligated by state law to
report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect to the Department of Social
Welfare.

 Parent Workshops – during the year, the counselor may sponsor group
sessions on a variety of topics including parenting skills, discipline.
