MS5002D Rotor Life Enhancement (RLE)

Abstract
The purpose of this Technical Bulletin is to inform Customers of the availability of the improved RLE design
for all MS5002D Gas Turbines. The new design consists of an improvement in cooling of the 1st stage turbine
wheel that, if applied to a new High Pressure (HP) rotor, will double the wheel life and consequently, the rotor
life, from the current 100kh to 200kh.

Serviceable Units
All MS5002D Gas Turbine models

Background
The improvement consists of the replacement of the 1st Stage Nozzle (S1N) and relevant support ring with
the one designed for the Fr52D+ (Power Crystal®). One of the features of the new support ring is the
introduction of 8 swirled holes that enhance the cooling of the 1st stage wheel forward side, as shown in the
figure below. Improved cooling of the 1st stage turbine wheel will increase the life of this component and,
consequently, the HP rotor life. If applied to a brand new rotor, the rotor life will double from the current
100kh to 200kh.

Fig.1 – Detail of the cooling hole in the S1N support ring

The limiting factor for the Fr52D HP rotor life is currently the 1st stage turbine wheel, whose temperature
profile dictates the rotor life of 100kh.
For a brand new rotor, with the introduction of the improved “Power Crystal type” wheel space cooling and
the consequent wheel metal temperature reduction, the rotor life is 200kh, which aligns the Fr52D HP rotor
life with that of all of the other frames.

For Fr52D rotors already in operation, the increase in rotor life resulting from the introduction of the
improvement may be less than 200kh, depending on the conditions experienced by the rotor up to the
upgrade.
For these cases, an engineering study is necessary to assess the residual life of the rotor prior to an RLE
upgrade.

The RLE Kit consists of:

 1st stage nozzle support ring
 1st stage nozzles (sectors + external ring)
 1st stage shrouds
 Inner barrel with brush seal
 Creation/modification of the two cooling holes on the upper half of compressor discharge casing

Recommendations
GE Oil & Gas suggests updating FR52D Gas Turbines with the improved RLE design whenever the rotor
needs to be replaced in order to achieve the maximum benefit of this improvement.

In all other cases, to implement the improved design, an engineering study will be conducted to assess the
residual life of the rotor prior to an RLE upgrade.
Those interested in considering an RLE upgrade are asked to complete the data sheet contained in
Attachment #1 and submit it to your GE Service Manager or Contract Performance Manager, or send it by
email to the following address: TECsupport.TEN@ge.com
