WORK, ENERGY AND POWER

Answer Key
Three Marks Questions
1. Positive work: (i) Work done by gravity on a The small amount of work dW done by force 𝐹⃗
free falling body is positive. (ii) Work done by in displacing the body by ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑑𝑆 is,
applied force when taken vertically up against ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ = 𝑚 𝑑𝑆

gravity is positive. Negative work: (i) The work
done by friction force on a moving body is 𝑚 𝑣⃗. ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑑𝑣 = mvdv
negative. (ii) The work done by gravity on a dW = mv dv
body moving up is negative. Zero work: Work Integrating both sides,

2. The energy possessed by a body by virtue of its Hence, Work = Change in kinetic energy.
motion is called kinetic energy. 4. Given :
Let us consider a body of mass m placed on a Force mg = 30 N ; height = 10 m
horizontal smooth surface. Apply a constant Work done to lift a load W = ?
force F on the body. Let initially the body be at W = F.S (or) mgh = 30x10
rest and after travelling a distance x, it acquires W = 300 J
the velocity v. 5. We know that the velocity of colliding body
Let a be the acceleration produced in the body. after collision is
Using equation of kinematics v2 – u2 =2as, we (𝑚1− 𝑚2) 𝑢1 +2𝑚2 𝑢2
v1 = 𝑚1 + 𝑚2
get v2= 2ax. Now, the work done by force is, W

= Fx = max = m{2 𝑣 2 } = 2 𝑚𝑣 2 Here m1<<< m2 and u2 = 0
Since the work done on the body sets it into
motion, therefore kinetic energy of body moving Therefore, m1 – m2 ≈ - m2 and m1 + m2 ≈ m2

Points to Remember
 Points to be Noticed for elastic collision:-

(i) The maximum transfer energy occurs if m1= m2

(ii) If Ki is the initial kinetic energy and Kf is the final kinetic energy of
mass m1, the fractional decrease in kinetic energy is given by,
Ki – Kf / Ki = 1- v12/u21
Further, if m2 = nm1 and u2 = 0, then,
Ki – Kf / Ki = 4n/(1+n)2
 Conservation Equation:

(i) Momentum – m1u1+m2u2 = m1v1+m2v2

(ii) Energy – ½ m1u12+ ½ m2u22 = ½ m1v12+ ½ m2v22
 Conservative force (F):- Conservative force is equal to the negative

gradient of potential V of the field of that force. This force is also called
central force.
So, F = - (dV/dr)
 The line integral of a conservative force around a closed path is always
zero.
So,
