Problem 1. Using the method of sections, determine the force in members GE, GC and BC of the truss shown below.
Indicate whether the members are in tension or compression.
Problem 2. Using the method of sections, determine the force in members FG and FH of the truss shown. Indicate
whether the members are in tension or compression.
Problem 3. Using the method of sections, determine the force in members DF and DE of the truss shown. Indicate
whether the members are in tension or compression.
Problem 4. Using the method of sections, determine the force in members ED, EH, and GH of the truss shown.
Indicate if the members are in tension or compression.

EXAMPLE 6 .5
Determine the force in members GE, GC. and BC of the truss shown G (I

in Fig. 6-16a. Indicate wlu~ther tl1c members arc in tension or
compression.
SOLUTION
Section aa in Fig. 6-l 6a has been chosen since it cuts through the three
members whose forces are to be determined. In order to use the
method of sections. however, it is first necessary 10 determine the (a)
external reactions ai A or D. Why? A free-body diagram of the entire
truss is shown in Fig. 6-16/J. Applying the equations of equilibrium.
we have
-±. 'I.Fx = 0: 400 N - A x = 0 A ,, = 400 N
C+LMt1 = 0: -1200N(8m)-400N(3m) + Dy( l2m ) = ()
Dy= 900N
A y - 1200 N + 900 N = 0 A_..= 300N

Free-Body Diagram. For the analysis the free-body diagram of the (b)
left portion of the sectioned truss will be used, since it involves the
least number of forces. Fig. 6-16c.
