Daily Test Physics Grade XII MIPA 3

Chapter 23 & 24.: Snell’s Law & Optical Instruments

Student’s name / class : _________________ / ______________
Directions:
1. Write your name and class in the blank space
2. There are 5 multiple choice questions, 3 drawing questions, and 4 essay problems in the test.
3. This is a closed book test. You cannot open any notes, textbooks, laptops, etc. during the test. You may use a
calculator.
4. You may not borrow stationaries and calculators from the other students. Any communication with the other students
will be assumed as cheating, and your test score will be zero.
Part 1. Multiple choice questions (10%)
1. Which of the following statements is not true about Huygens’s principle?
A. The rays in a plane wave are parallel to the wavefront.
B. Every point on a wavefront is considered a source of spherical wavelets.
C. The wavefronts of light are closer together inside the water than the air.
D. A ray always perpendicular to the wavefront
E. None of these statements are incorrect.
2. Sunlight strikes the surface of a lake. A diver (inside the lake, n =1.33) sees the Sun at an angle of 42.0° with respect
to the vertical. What angle do the Sun’s rays in air (n=1) make with the vertical?
A. 42.0°
B. 0.503°
C. 0.889°
D. 62.9°
E. 30.2°
3. A ray of light is reflected from two mirrored surfaces as shown in the figure. If the initial
angle of incidence is 34°. What is the value of angle 𝛽?
A. 22
B. 34°
C. 56°
D. 68°
E. 72°
4. The image formation image from the plane mirror can be obtained using Snell’s Law of
Reflection. These are some statements about the characteristics of the image of an object in a plane mirror:
I. The image is real.
II. The image is always the same size as the object.
III. The image is virtual.
IV. The image can be larger, smaller, or the same size as the object, depending on the distance between the
object and the mirror.
Which statements are correct?
A. I and IV
B. III and IV
C. II and III
D. I and II
5. A 45° prism has an index of refraction of 1.6. Light is normally incident on the left side
of the prism. Does light exit the back of the prism?
A. Since the angle of incidence (45°) is greater than the critical angle (39°), no light
exits the back of the prism.
B. Since the angle of incidence (90°) is greater than the critical angle (39°), no light
exits the back of the prism.
C. Since the angle of incidence (39°) is smaller than the critical angle (45°), some of
the light would exit the back of the prism and some light will be reflected inside the
prism
D. Since the angle of incidence (39°) is smaller than the critical angle (45°), all light would exit the back of the prism

Part 2. Drawing questions (30%)

6. Draw the appropriate rays to find the image by the converging mirror with a focal length of 2.0 cm, when an object
(arrow) has a height of 1.0 cm placed 3.0 cm in front of the mirror. Determine the characteristics of the image.

7. Draw the appropriate rays to find the image by the diverging lens with a focal length of 2.0 cm, when an object (arrow)
has a height of 1.0 cm placed 3.0 cm in front of the lens. Determine the characteristics of the image.

8. An object is placed 3.0 cm in front of a lens of focal length +4.0 cm. Another lens of focal length -2.0 cm is placed 2.0 cm
past the first lens. What are the characteristics of the final image? Draw the ray diagram to determine the location of the
image.

Part 3. Essay problems (60%)

9. A beam of light in air enters a glass block at an angle of 25° to the glass surface, as shown. The glass has an index of
refraction of 1.35. (a) Find the angle labeled 𝜃1. (b) Calculate the critical angle between the glass and air. (c) Does the light
follow path A, path B, or Both? Explain.
Answer:

10. A light ray in the core (n=1.40) of a cylindrical optical fiber is incident on the cladding as shown in the figure. A ray is
transmitted through the cladding (n=1.20) and into the air. The emerging ray makes an angle θ 2= 5.00 ° with the outside
surface of the cladding. What angle θ1 did the ray in the core make with the axis?
Answer:

11. Bruce is trying to remove an eyelash from the surface of his eye. He looks in a shaving mirror to locate the eyelash,
which is 0.40 cm long. If the focal length of the mirror is 18 cm and he puts his eye at a distance of 11 cm from the mirror,
how long is the image of his eyelash? Answer:

14. An object is placed 3.0 cm in front of a lens of focal length +4.0 cm. Another lens of focal length -2.0 cm is placed 2.0 cm
past the first lens. What are the characteristics of the final image? Use the thin lens equation. Answer:
