What Martin Luther King, the peaceful warrior, and his followers suffered, it is hard
to describe. They were abused and stoned by the mob, slapped and kicked by the police and
jeered by some of their own men. The police used the loses and ferocious dogs to rout them
and the law courts sent them to solitary confinement where not a ray of sun entered. Their
women and children fared no once a black church was bombed, killing four little girls
