1860 M ​ uslim Sailors and Prisoners arrived on Convict Ships


1860s ​There was an increase in the camel transportation industry. They transported goods and people through the desert

1870s ​Muslim Malay divers were recruited to work in the pearl trade in Western Australia and the Northern Territory
1880s ​Approximately 3000 Muslims were working as camel drivers
1882 ​First Mosque was built in Marre, SA
1890 ​ Another Mosque built in Adelaide bring Muslims from Lebanon and Turkey
1901 ​Introduction of the Immigration Restriction Act in Australia. This majorly impacted the number of Muslims living in

1911 ​ Approximately 300 Turkish Muslims were counted in Australia, which decreased further at the start of World War 1

FIRST MOSQUE | Marre, SA

Not only does this mosque hold significance as it was the first-ever Mosque to be built in Australia but because of what it
symbolises. It represents the development backed by Muslim immigrants. It shows how the Muslims working together as a
community and people of the land joined together to help build the town known as Marree in South Australia.
