Mass movement
Objective Observe and record the effects of mass movement 

Materials 

Timer Plastic cup Used Plastic long folder Liquid detergent or oil

Water (school) Ruler Duct tape Books or blocks

Paper plate (2) Marker Sand Stirring sticks

Procedure:

1.) Use a larger table or two desks together.

2.) Stack four books or blocks up.

3.) Using the ruler, mark (with the marker) centimeter increments on the both edges of the plastic folder. Mark the
entire length of the folder.

4.) Tape one end of the plastic folder to the desk and tape the other end to the top of the books. Make sure the plastic
folder is tight.

5.) Measure the height of the books and note it here: _12_ cm

6.) What is the length of the plastic folder? Note it here: _33_cm

7.) Fill the beaker ½ - ¾ full of sand and then mix in oil or detergent. You want to make a gloppy mixture. Add water and
sand as needed. The mixture should be easily mixed, but not stiff or have puddles in it.

8.) Double side a piece of duct tape and attach to the side of the beaker. A small plate should be held over the opening
of the beaker till ready to start. The beaker can be placed on its side on top of the books facing down the plastic slope.

Hypothesis:

What is going to happen when the paper plate is removed? (Be specific, include rates, speeds)

_Once the paper plate was removed, there was an increase in flow of the mixture because the
beaker used is inclined towards directly on the folder which is on a diagonal position.

9.) Remove the plate covering to begin. After thirty second, take a measurement of the distance traveled by the paste.
Record your data in the data table provided.

(it may be necessary to tilt the beaker slightly to get the paste moving then return to its side)

Questions:

1.) Construct a line graph of this data. Remember that time is the independent variable and should go on the x-axis and
Distance on the y-axis.

2.) Using the graph and your data chart, calculate the velocity of the line:

Slope (velocity) =Distance / Time

a. Velocity for the first 3 minutes: _2.33_

b. Velocity for the last 3 minutes: _4.5_

c. How are the two velocity different? Why?

_Velocity in the last 3 minutes is higher compared to the velocity for the first 3 minutes, since that there are
more time consumed already in the last 3 minutes therefore it has a higher velocity.

3.) How would your data look if the mixture was more watery?

It will have same distance covered but the rate of motion of the mixture will be faster than expected.

4.) How would your data look if the mixture was more firm?

It may result to a slower rate of motion, and will take more time.

5.) How would your data look if the slope was different?

It may affect the flow of the mixture and may not be properly poured down.

6.) What are some risks on mass movements if:

a. You’re building your house on top of the hill and the area gets a lot of rain.

The foundation of the house might be affected resulting to sudden movements that may cause your house
to slide down on the side of the hill.

b. You build your house on the slope.

It may be affected in case landslide occurs and it may be washed out in its original place.

c. You build a road at the base of the hill and there is a rainy season.

It may be blocked out by the debris such as rocks, trees, sands and others that may fall on it.

7.) Does the soil/sand need to be moist to flow down the plastic sheeting? Explain.

No, because there are other types of soil that even if it’s dry still it may continuously fall down.
