CFT 30 Rebuild
In the CFT 30 introduction webinar we saw various aspects of the CFT 30.
Trouble codes, the valve body layout and a few other highlighted areas.
This webinar will cover the rebuild procedures and special tools need to get
the job done quickly and efficiently.
Case Disassembly Highlights
There is a special socket to remove and replace the shaft nuts.

You may need a

a very large torque

You may also need to
chain the unit to the
floor.

Case Connector
Be careful with the case connector.
It does not pull straight out.
Remove the bolt and twist counter

Remove 26 10mm bolts to split the case.
It is not necessary to

this time. This will be
done during

CFT 30 Rebuild
Always carefully inspect the bearing
surface on the input shaft/planet.
This a high failure area.
Inspect here.
Always inspect
the bearing

pocket in the
backside of the
planet as well.

Pay close attention to
these two O‐rings.
These O‐rings have

It is very important to split the manual valve body to clean the check valves

Case and chain removal
To remove the variators from the case and to remove the chain from
the variators the variator support fixture must be installed.
Lightly lube the
O‐ring inside the
tool to protect
the variator seal
surface.

Case Removal
While it is possible to remove the variators and chain from the case its not
easy and parts can get damaged easily. Take the time to search the internet
for these tools. They are cheaper than you would think.
The first step on pressing the shafts from the case is to attach the special
tools to the case.

NOTE: It’s good practice to chase the threads
with a thread tap before installing the special
tools.

Case Removal
Run the screws through the crossbar until they just contact the inserts.
To remove the case from the shafts evenly, each bolt must be turned 1/4 of
a turn at a time.
Failure to do so will cause case damage.
NEVER USE AN AIR TOOL FOR THIS JOB!
CFT 30 Rebuild
Chain and pulley disassembly
Install the compressor tool into the groove on the driven shaft.
CFT 30 Rebuild
Chain and pulley disassembly (continued)
Always use a ratchet to tighten down the compressor tool.
While the chain is loose
remove the two chain
guides.
This will pull the pulley
wider so the chain will
be loose.
Use a ratchet to turn
this screw. NEVER a
power tool.
CFT 30 Rebuild
Chain and pulley disassembly (continued)
The slack chain will give
enough room so the drive
pulley can be lifted
towards the driven shaft
and up and out of the
chain.

Driven Pulley Inspection
The driven pulley can be disassembled with a great deal of effort and it is
not recommended. The pulley can be air checked through the end cover. It
takes too much pressure to move the piston. We are listening for air leaks
when we do the test.
Air check here and
listen for leaks

Drive Piston Housing (continued)
The seals on the drive piston are extremely tough teflon seals. These seals
are built to withstand high heat and extreme pressures. There is an O‐ring
behind the seals that keep the seal against the piston wall.
There is no chamfer built into the housing. This makes installing the piston
into the housing impossible without a ring compressing tool.

Lastly drive or press the piston retainer onto the shaft. Assemble the
variators and chain in the reverse order of disassembly.

Case Assembly Highlights
Pressing the case back onto the shafts can be done without the special
tools and is not recommended.
Use the special press fixture to make this a safe easy job.

case. The deep driver goes
on the drive shaft and the
shallow driver on the
driven shaft
CFT 30 Rebuild
Case Assembly Highlights (continued)
Set the screws against the drivers and turn the screws down with hand
tools a ¼ turn at a time. The shafts will bottom out on the drivers when all
the way down. NEVER use air tools on these screws.
CFT 30 Rebuild
Case Assembly Highlights (continued)
It’s a good idea to leave the axle seal out of the case until after installing the
differential. It is very easy to tear the seal when installing the diff into the
case.

Front Pump Notes
The CFT 30 pump has been known to break springs. This can cause a noise
similar to a cracked flywheel. During service always inspect the pump
plungers and springs.
Remove the snap ring to disassemble the pump.
CFT 30 Rebuild
Front Pump Notes
Pry the last pump ring out of the pump to
remove the plungers.
CAUTION! The pump springs are under a lot of
pressure and will bounce out of the bores.
If broken springs are found a
pump slide spring from a
4L60E pump slide return
spring is a good replacement.
CFT 30 Rebuild
Front Pump Notes
To assemble the pump you will need to fabricate special tools from parts
available from your hardware store.
Use 8 three inch clamps ground down as shown to compress the piston
springs.
