JMHS English Dept.

Plagiarism Policy

When a student plagiarizes, please post the warning (see below) and ADD THE STUDENT'S INFO in
alphabetical order (last name, first) to the shared Google sheet: Plagiarism Tracker Sheet. You don't
have to email Megan or Marta with this info.

The student should be given a 0 with one attempt remaining, and the assignment should be re-opened
for 2nd submission. (For repeat offenders procedure, see below.)

Effective immediately, you have been given an Academic Warning with James Madison High School. As a result of
the seriousness of this violation, your coursework from this point forward will be subject to review. If you plagiarize
again, you will immediately be put on Academic Probation which means that any additional violations of the policy
can result in dismissal from this program. JMHS considers plagiarism a serious offense.

You have one submission attempt remaining. Remember that if your second attempt is plagiarized, the principal
will be notified, and you will automatically be moved to Academic Probationary status. We value the opportunity to
serve as your teachers, but plagiarism is simply not allowed at JMHS.

If you need help avoiding plagiarism, please visit the Writing Lab in the Learning Resource Center which is located
in your Student Portal or the English Lab located within your course on the left-hand navigation menu.  This will
provide you with the information you need in order to develop an essay free from plagiarism. If you need additional
assistance, you may contact Academic Service Advisors for tutor help at 1-800-224-7234. You also have the option
to book a one-on-one session with a remediation coach. 30 minute coaching sessions may be self-booked at
https://jmhswritingcoach.youcanbook.me/ Coaches may also be reached at write2@jmhs.com.

*Feel free to coach students on your own within the normal course of feedback if they are close to
getting it right or simply need a small amount of direction. In those cases, there is no need to refer the
student through the warning/probation process.

* 2nd TIME/REPEAT OFFENDERS: * Go into the assignment (don't post a grade and do not allow a re-
submission) and post the following statement:

You are now on Academic Probation. The principal has been notified, and you will be receiving an official
letter. Any further plagiarism is cause for dismissal from the program at this point. You will have ONE
remaining attempt, but you are now required to meet with a writing coach in order for you to receive a
grade on this assignment. Please immediately go to https://jmhswritingcoach.youcanbook.me/ to self-
book an appointment.

Once a student plagiarizes twice, Marta will see the student name listed twice on the Plagiarism Tracker
Sheet and alert Megan to send academic probation letter. A note will be placed next to the student’s
name on the sheet so the teacher will know when the student has been placed on probation. It’s also
helpful if you can email Marta when a student has plagiarized twice and needs to be placed on
probation. The student will need to meet with a writing coach. Once that meeting is complete, the coach
will place a note in the assignment feedback stating that the student has met with a coach.
