Starbucks began in 1971.

Back then they were a roaster and retailer of whole bean and
ground coffee, tea and spices with a single store in Seattle’s Pike Place Market located in
Washington.

Today, they are privileged to connect with millions of customers every day with
exceptional products and more than 30,000 retail stores in 80 markets. The major countries from
three different continents with which the Starbucks Co. operates as of September 2018 are
United states with 8,575 stores, China with 3,521 stores, and United Kingdom with 335 stores.

Starbucks offers a range of exceptional products that customers enjoy in their stores, at
home, and on the go. The product that they were best known for is their coffee with more than 30
blends and single-origin premium coffees. The other beverage they provide are handcrafted
beverages such as fresh-brewed coffee, hot and iced espresso beverages, iced coffee, cold brew,
nitro, frappuccino coffee and non-coffee blended beverages, starbucks refreshers beverages, and
teavana teas.

The revenue of the Starbucks Co. for 2017 is $22.387B, a 5.02% increase from 2016;
then on 2018 a revenue of $24.72B, a 10.42% increase from 2017; and on 2019 it shows a

With such reach and power comes tremendous responsibility. Starbucks touts its own
corporate responsibility – claiming to be climate change aware and cognizant of its
environmental cup print. In 2008, Starbucks pledged to make a 100% recyclable paper cup and
sell 25% of drinks in reusable cups by 2015. But Starbucks has failed to produce a 100%
recyclable paper cup, and currently serves only 1.4% of drinks in reusable cups. In fact,
Starbucks cups, lids, and iconic green straws make up a visible portion in global plastic pollution
in our oceans. With this issue, Starbucks was expected to take immediate steps before the plastic
pollution overwhelms the oceans and marine life. However, the company continues to turn a
blind eye to his company’s contribution to pollution. In 2018, Starbucks has pledged to
dramatically expand its presence in Asia. They plan to have a massive global growth— with no
plan to address its plastic waste. According to PR Newswire (2018), Starbucks even vowed to
open one store evert 15 hours in China in 2018.

As a company with huge influence and reach to effect real progress through its
environmental commitments, Starbucks starts to develop and maintain sustainable it can afford.
They’ve made sustainability as a priority and as a result, they built meaningful and sustained
change.

Greener Stores, Greener Cups and Packaging, and Greener Power are some of the
sustainable practices Starbucks is committed to.

Greener Stores

Starbucks joined U.S. Green Building Council and collaborated with them to develop the
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Retail program, an effort to adapt
LEED to new construction and commercial interior strategies for retail businesses. It is the
practice of designing, constructing, and operating buildings to maximize occupant health and
productivity, use fewer resources, reduce waste and negative environmental impacts, and
decrease life cycle costs. It produces a healthy work environments and efficient responsible
operations.

Greener Cups and Packaging

The company’s goal is to double the recycled content, recyclability and compostability,
and reusability of our cups and packaging by 2022.
Greener Energy

They have invested in renewable energy since 2005, steadily increasing our purchases of
renewable energy certificates until we achieved our goal of obtaining 100 percent of the
electricity powering global company-operated stores from renewable sources in 2015.
