Why is English a useful language?

The benefits of speaking a

foreign language
As we all know English is the most widely spoken language, with 1.5 billion
speakers. When you travel around the world, you might not know the language
there, but English can also be spoken in many counties in the world.

With that, you can assume that English is not that hard to learn. Depending on
your mother language, you can learn it very easily, especially because kids are
learning it from a young age in school. Particularly English is useful, because of its
reputation in the world. If you are traveling you can easily communicate with
people because English is a language that must be at least a little known in tourist
countries. The other reason why this language is really popular and useful in
everyday life. All our phones firstly come to English, and then you can change it.
All social media are firstly shown in English. So the language has "the privilege"
to all technology. Another benefit of knowing the English language is getting a job
more easily. If you are a multilingual speaker, that's a benefit that could come in
handy. English speakers can be surely found in every country in the world, which
if you can imagine is a lot. Speaking a foreign language improves the functionality
of your brain by challenging it to recognize, negotiate to mean, and communicate
in different language systems. This skill boosts your ability to negotiate meaning in
other problem-solving tasks as well. Students who study foreign languages tend to
score better at standardized tests than their monolingual peers, particularly in the
categories of maths, reading, and vocabulary. Multilingual people, especially
children, are skilled at switching between two systems of speech, writing, and
structure. According to a study from Pennsylvania State University, this “juggling”
skill makes them good multitaskers, because they can easily switch between
different structures. In one study, participants used a driving simulator while doing
separate, distracting tasks at the same time. The research found that people who
spoke more than one language made fewer errors in their driving. As mentioned
before, speaking multiple foreign languages can improve the thinking of your
brain. Meaning that your brain will think in multiple languages. Educators often
liken the brain to a muscle, because it functions better with exercise. Learning a
language involves memorizing rules and vocabulary, which helps strengthen that
mental “muscle.” This exercise improves overall memory, which means that
multiple language speakers are better at remembering lists or sequences. Studies
show that bilinguals are better at retaining shopping lists, names, and directions.

Learning a foreign language draws your focus to the mechanics of language:

grammar, conjugations, and sentence structure. This makes you more aware of
language, and the ways it can be structured and manipulated. These skills can make
you a more effective communicator and a sharper editor and writer. Language
speakers also develop a better ear for listening, since they’re skilled at
distinguishing meaning from discreet sounds.

With all these facts, articles, and essays about the English language itself, we
can see that the language is useful. It's the most widely spoken language in the
world and there's a lot of benefits if knowing it. I hoped this essay helped if you are
looking for motivation and reasons why you should learn another language. I
promise you, it's worth it!
