Area of a triangle

1) Area = Base height , therefore Area= BC AD (figure above)

2) Area of right angled triangle= Product of perpendicular sides
3) Area= √ ( )( )( ) where s= =

4) Area = , R= circumradius
5) Area = rS, where r= inradius and S= semi perimeter
6) Area of an equilateral triangle

a) , where a is the side of the triangle

b) , where R= circumradius
c) √ , where r= inradius
7) Area of an isosceles triangle = √

QA – Area

Area Pointers

1) If the two triangles have the same base and lie between the same parallel lines (as
shown in figure), then the area of two triangles will be equal

i.e., A ( )=A( ).

2) The ratio of areas of two triangles of equal heights is equal to the ratio of their
corresponding bases
3) The ratio of areas of triangles of equal bases is equal to the ratio of their heights.
4) The ratio of the areas of two triangles is equal to the ratio of the products of base
and its corresponding heights

Solved Examples:

1) The base of a right angled triangle is 12 cm and hypotenuse is 37 cm. Find its area.

Hypotenuse = √ ( ) ( )

(37) = √ )

1369 =14

Area =

QA – Area

Area of an equilateral triangle = ( )

= ( √ ) = √

3) The area of a right angled triangle is 30 cm2 and the length of its hypotenuse is 13
cm. The length of the shorter leg is :
We know that
Area

( ) = 169 + 120= 289

( ) 289

Again ( ) = 169 – 120= 49

( ) 9

Therefore
4) Find the area of a triangle whose sides are 12 cm, 16 cm and 20cm long.

Since 122 + 162 = 202

Hence it is a right angled triangle.

Area =

5) Find the area and perimeter of an isosceles triangle whose equal sides are 5 cm each
and base is 6 cm.

Area of an isosceles triangle

√ =12

Alternatively: We know that the altitude CD bisects the base AB in the isosceles triangle
ABC.
AD=BD=3cm
Using Pythagoras theorem in ADC we have,
