2. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is about corporate financial reporting – the form and content of the
mandatory financial information disclosed by the firms to the external parties (e.g.,
shareholders). This course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of
the underlying measurement concepts and the valuation and measurement rules for assets,
liabilities and owners’ equity, as laid down in GAAP.

The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International

Accounting Standards Board (IASB) are working on convergence project to produce
unified set of high-quality accounting standards. As the U.S. adopts the new
International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), some areas of reporting may
significantly change. Throughout the course, we will discuss international accounting
standard treatment of various topics, especially where differences in US GAAP and IFRS
are substantial.

3. PREREQUISITES:

5. CLASS STRUCTURE/ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION:

We all know that it is to your benefit to attend class regularly, be well prepared,
focus, and act professionally. However I want to reward you with points if you do.
Your regular attendance and participation is a sign of the effort you are putting into
this class, and I believe you should earn some points for it. I will track attendance
and participation using Kahoot! on your internet-enabled device. Please make sure

to set up Kahoot! (see kahoot.it) on your device. If you do not have an internet-enabled
device (laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.), please let me know immediately. Your
Attendance and Participation grade will be based on your Kahoot! participation, not
the number of points you accumulate in Kahoot!.

Read the textbook prior to each new chapter. Students forming impromptu
teams will solve assignments & problems in class. In this class, students are active
participants. Participation in class does not mean “good” answers but more of thoughtful
questions, helping focus complicated ideas, suggesting reasonable alternatives and being
willing to try out new ideas. This is a 4-unit course that meets four hours every week. It is
recommended that at least two hours of quality study time on your own for every hour
spent in class per week is applied to this course but the rule of thumb depends on the
individual student’s aptitude for accounting. Some students will have to devote more time
to this course than other students.

Students must give prior notice of excused absences as far in advance as possible.
As per the University Attendance Policy, excused absences include (1) Illness or injury
to the student, (2) Death, injury or serious illness of an immediate family member or the
