FARUS DIALOGUE

FARUS
Don’t you ever feel penned in? How
does it feel to be a slave? If I
were a slave, I’d run away! Why
don’t you?

IONE
Where would I run to?

FARUS
You could go home.

IONE
But this is home; same as it
is yours.

FARUS
Nonsense! You can’t be content
here! This place stifles me.
Sometimes I think I’ll jump out of
my skin.

IONE
Your father would be sorry if he
heard you say such things.

FARUS
Well, he won’t. But I had to say
it to somebody. Please forgive me.

IONE
Of course. It’s natural to be
restless. This place isn’t big
enough to hold you. You’ll get over
that when you are old.

FARUS
Wouldn’t you like to see something
besides sheep? Go to some place
where they talked about other
things than the price of livestock?
Wouldn’t you like to live in a
great house -- in a great city?

IONE
No, dear. I’ve done that. I’m
satisfied here -- where I am, in
these mountains.

FARUS
Maybe I should be satisfied too. I
wish I was like other people.
There’s something wrong with me.
I’m different. And I hate it.
