Pier Scouring
Scouring

The debris mostly consist of wooden trunk and raft which mostly
accumulated at bridge pier during peak or high floods. These
accumulation of debris at bridge pier stop, divert or redirect flow
through bridge opening which may result the loading of bridge or
excessive bridge pier scouring. The debris which accumulate at bridge
pier have different shapes and sizes. It varies from very small size to
huge size which sometimes result blockage at bridge and causes water
to over flow and result flood. Finding depth of scouring and remedial
measure for protecting against scour problem is main finding for last 40
years and is progressing rapidly. But unfortunately, the accumulation of
debris at Bridge pier is still main concern and scouring because of it is
not find yet fully due to lack of knowledge and information. Dongle in
(1989,1992) conducted and reported laboratory study about scour
depth at circular bridge pier with debris raft (timber). Diehl (1997)
concluded that one of the major sources for bridge scouring in U.S is
the debris accumulation around piers. Erickson (1998) also taken also
into account the common cause for bridge pier scour is the debris
accumulation (Park et al., 2016). One of the study(Briaud et al., 2006)
answered the following question 1. How much debris come down river?
2. How much quantity of debris accumulates at bridge piers? 3. What is
shape of debris accumulated. 4. How deep will be the scour holes?
These answers result in paving our way for more research. This area is
not fully addressed which should be addressed. Another study (Dias et
al., 2019) which conclude that among all factor’s debris shape has
greater influence on final scour at pier. The triangular shape of debris
act as countermeasure reduces scour up to 26%. Our objective in this
study will be to take more factor such as slope, morphology, velocity of
flow and its effect on Scour.
