SYNOPSIS:
The Project has been named as GREENCIL MAKER, as it strives to make pencils,The prime
aim of this project is to increase the awareness of the recycling, following the governments
footsteps in its objective to increase production in GREEN SECTOR TECHNOLOGY
Our aim is to develop a low cost Green pencil maker,There are a lot of similar projects, but
we differentiate ourselves by making it simpler and coupling it with renewable energy. We
have thrived all through the project to tilt it towards the green technology wherever possible.
Viz, Sprouts at the pencils end.
The GREENCIL MAKER can exponentially reduce the manufacturing cost by using
recycling papers while producing completely assembled pencil at a phenomenal rate of one
pencil every 30 seconds if done manually and at a astonishing speed of 5 seconds if
automated. The primitive pencil makers are not portable and use electricity. The “GREENCIL
MAKER” entirely portable and can function manually & the key differentiator here is that the
automated motor, employed for the process is solar powered, in turn, will not be contributing
to the harmful green house gases.

The machine uses the simple & efficient concept of pressure plates, cylinders and conveyor
belt. At the outset, a paper is rolled cut into desired dimension. Then the paper is rolled with
the carbon and fed into the rolling machine. The pressure can be regulated to the extent, that
the graphite won’t be ruptured in the rolling process. Once the paper is rolled and pencil
attains its final shape, we can size it to the needs.
The icing on the cake is, once the production is completed, sprouts are inducted at the
pencil’s topby using a gelatin cap.So when the pencil is exhausted it can take the shape of a
sapling which can be planted elsewhere.

INTRODUCTION
This innovation initially started only as 3R project, whereby a group of SMK Raja Mahadi
students collaborated under a club in the school to raise fund to run certain activities. At the
budding stage the papers were collected from the school and sent to scrap for recycling,
which grew in to a tiresome process of collecting the large volumes of papers, which
fructified in to very meagre amount. That’s where westarted to research a year ago on the
usage of recycling papers& saw light at the other end of the tunnel. After several hiccups,
cuts & bruising attempts we have come out with a simple machine which can be a cash crop
for us.
This activity was planned meticulously and executed by a way of Campaign named as
CLEAN & GREEN.
Under this campaign students were asked to collect waste papers individually, and group
them, segregate them and then it was sorted and used.

PROBLEMS FACED:
There was a lot of apprehension in taking the project forward to list a few:
SCOPE:
LIMITATION:
• Since this is a small prototype machinery, which can be used at a micro & small level
enterprises.
• Scaling up of the production and employing a large work force requires a heap of
improvement and funds to make this machine a factory-ready one.
• As the pencils are sun-dried, the production time increases exponentially which can
be controlled by employing at drier.
• An abrader machine will also help in smoothing out the surface of the pencils , after
it’s cut to desired size.

PENCILS FROM PAPER WASTES- HAND MADE
We started this project to encourage recycling papers. Like other educational institutions,
paper consumption is very high in our school and I devised a simple cost-effective method to
transform old papers and magazines into a high-quality quality pencil which can be used at
school or at work. The following materials are required to start your paper recycling project.
• White Glue
• Lead from any stationary store
• Old newspapers
• Pencil for drawing lines
• Ruler
• Scissor
•
Step 1
Use 4 to 5 pages of the newspaper and measure the right size for the lead which is about 18
cm length x 10cm width. You can also draw with the pencil to make sure it fits the right size
of the lead.
Step 2
Cut the newspaper following the lines you have drawn and it will look like a rectangle
shape.
KITH_SMKRM 2019 19
Step 3
Apply glue at the edge of the rectangle shaped-paper and place the lead to start the rolling
process.
Step 4
Carefully roll the paper with lead inside by using glue at fixed intervals.
Step 5
After finishing the rolling process, let it dry for few minutes. Re-start the rolling process with
another piece of newspaper until the pencil is of the same size as a regular wood pencil.
Finally, your pencil, which will be same as a normal wooden pencil, is ready for use.
We managed to do this as a initial project before taking it in to the next automated level

From the above blue print we have taken the measurement and sought the help of the school’s
workshop in making the machine:
1. With the help from work shop, a cuboid shaped framed has been welded an and put in
place at the accurate dimension; As this frame provides the body of the machine at
most care was taken so that the frame doesn’t look skewed. In order to emphasize on
the recycling the frame was constructed from the scrap iron bars.
2. An additional
ional rod was welded right below the top side of the frame on both side in
order to house the cylinders.
3. The cylinder was then inserted inside the gap and a chain sprocket was fixed at the
cylinder’s end; a total of four chain sprockets were added to the cylinder’s ends.
4. The chain sprockets were then linked with the help of the chain, which will give the
drive motion to the cylinder when connected to the motor. Pic shown below:
5. Pressure plates were affixed at the bottom and top engulfing the cylinders
cylinder in order to
provide even and efficient pressure required by the product
KITH_SMKRM 2019 24
6. This cylinder along with its chain-drives,
chain once connected to electricity will become an
automated process, alternatively it can be attached with an handle and rotatory motion
can be used as depicted by the below picture:

Eco friendly products
We hold our heads high with a wide range of Mechanical Equipment that are reliable, durable
and intelligently assembled together for better and pristine performance.
Rolling machine is the Paper P Pencil

integrate the Lead with the Paper. The pressure plates involved gives exact pressure in order
to give the perfect roll, Once the paper is glued with the Lead, an operator inserts the raw
materials under a rolling pin; the products glide below a horizontal conveyor belt. The
finished pencils are perfectly cylindrical in shape.

This time line chart shows crest & trough the project has undergone to get this final shape
KITH_SMKRM 2019 31
Development of production equipment at a nominal price is essential to the success of most
products. Thee ability to produce machines at low cost, will in turn helps produce products at a
lesser cost and can be sold at lower price points and still be profitable, especially if the
outcome of the production is done
ne with the recycle materials.
In the early stages of a products life, from the initial design of pencil making machines the
machineries are only found in bigger sizes with a high capital. This makes only a small group
of entrepreneurs to own the machines

RESULTS & DISCUSSION:
REVIEW FINDINGS:
MATERIALS Made from 100% recycled paper with Wood-based writing tool
graphite writing core with graphite writing core
As a result of our innovation we have come out with our very own paper pencils. As an added
value we have used many types’ vegetable seeds in this sprout pencil. For an example chilli,
tomato, brinjal, ragi, millets, flowers, tulsi, coriander, tej and chive.
The pencil cap which we used for this sprout will dissolved in soil within 2days.
KITH_SMKRM 2019 40
So when the pencil is sharpened and when it’s exhausted, we can have it planted in a pot.
Now it will become a new pencil plant within a week.
Belowis the Pictures of the Saplings grown via the sprouts at the Pencils end
KITH_SMKRM 2019 41
Those were monitored on a weekly basis and the results speaks for itself
We found that the quality of making paper pencils are on par with wooden pencils. We had to
experiment with various glues, as they had to be chemical free. Since most children have the
habit of chewing the pencils, we have to make sure that the glue is nontoxic and they are very
much called eco-friendly pencils. For making a paper pencil from old newspaper usually
takes 1.5 days under the sunlight.
