What Is Meant by Retrofitting Structures
What Is Meant by Retrofitting Structures
how can I say that I retrofitted this structure to resist against a future earthquake ?
what should change between the damaged and the retrofitted responses of the structure ?
Best regards

Retrofitting is the process of addition of new features to older buildings, heritage structures,
bridges etc. Retrofitting reduces the vulnerability of damage of an existing structure during a
near future seismic activity.
Retrofitting of RCC structural members is carried out to regain the strength of deteriorated
structural concrete elements and to prevent further distress in concrete. Strength deficiency of
concrete structural members can be due to poor workmanship, design errors, and deterioration
due to the aggression of harmful agents.
There are several techniques which are used to retrofit structural members such as section
enlargement, external plate bonding, external post-tensioning, grouting, and fibre reinforced
polymer composites. Based on the severity of the damage and required capacity to be regained,
a proper retrofitting technique is specified and implemented.

Dear Ponkumar;
Let us say rehabilitation, what should be rehabilitated in this case ? what are the parameters to
study ?

Yes ,we can say Rehabilitation of the structure so as to you asked this Question " What is
mean by retrofitting structures? "
Then we have to go for Type of Retrofitting of the Structure Because some place various type
of failure and crack width also - more or less , so according to have to be select the filling
materials and rapping sheets also if required , these have to be provided and corrected the
structure . This is Retrofitting of the structures.

Dear Ponkumar
What I'm doing is purely numeric and simulation. I'm damaging a 2D shear building how I'm
doing that by reducing K and C is some specific floors (Ground floor, middle floor and top
floor). when I do this she behaviour of the structures change.
The questions is what are the parameters that I should check before and after the retrofitting ?
mode shapes ? frequencies ? displacements ? accelerations ? velocity ? how can I prove that my
technique or strategy is working ?

ya that was i said before and During Design what are the parameters must be followed that
should be collect ,once again Have to be checked Types and Loading each Floor and moment

I have worked on structural optimization using MATLAB. Now I want to publish
in an International Journal. I thought Computers and structures first. But, I would like to know
which would be a suitable journal to publish such work. I have written a paper and MATLAB
code as well. Thanks a ton in advance.

Why CSI Bridge/SAP2000 showing Plastic Hinge in Bridge Pier even if Pier Moment

Hello every one,
I am doing analysis of Bridge in which elastomeric bearing is modeled as link element between
Deck and pier bent. Pier bent portal consist 2 pier and one cap beam on which elastomeric
bearing are resting and on elastomeric bearing bridge deck is rest. I am doing non linear time
history analysis.
Now (1 )due to elastomeric bearing, moment/forces are not transferred to pier hence bottom
moment of pier has not reached Mp value and stresses in pier is very less (at least half of yield
stress of Concrete)
(2) Joint Forces at link bottom has reached maximum level of forces and for bearing perfect
elastoplastic force displacement curve has given as input of link

Any information about various initial and life cycle cost models of Tuned Mass Dampers
(TMD)?

Hello everybody
Despite a few TMD cost models available in the literature, I am searching for more accurate
initial and lifetime cost models of translational TMDs for Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) of
TMD-equipped structures.
In fact, the provided cost model affiliated with one of the companies designs and manufactures
transitional TMD (such as LeMessurier CO.), which this model consists TMD initial cost
(construction and installation of the TMD) and TMD damage cost (maintenance and repair
losses of TMD before structural collapse)

This paper deals with the numerical model of a bracing-friction damper system and its
deployment using the optimal slip load distribution for the seismic retrofitting of a damaged
building. The Slotted Bolted Connection (SBC) type friction damper system was tested to
investigate its energy dissipation characteristic. Test results coincided with the...
