 Learning Exercise 1.

2 (Discussion)
Examine your home, check for any defects, and take a picture of it. Comment your picture and state what
property of concrete do you think greatly affects the defect on your picture.

1. Rearwall of the house

I saw a lot of cracks in my aunties house that can be defect in the concrete. In this first picture the
crack in this wall indicates the losing of its tensile strength that’s why the concrete starting to break in the
middle part.
2. Inside wall of my aunt’s store

In this second picture it is the same in the first picture that indicates in lower in tensile strength. But
in this second picture it shows that the cracks are larger than the first one that I can say its flexural strength
of the concrete is weaker that it causes to break in the middle part of the wall.
3. Bedroom (wall)

In this third picture which is my bed room there’s a lot of cracks which indicates in volume changes
of concrete that cause the shrinkage in concrete. It may be the higher water ratio that causes or it can be
the admixture of that concrete which causes the cracks and it produce tensile stress in the concrete. I saw
a lot of voids it can be the reason why it has a crack.
4. Bedroom (wall)

The fourth picture in my bedroom again, it is the same in the first and second picture. Indicates the
weaker tensile strength that causes to break on the upper middle part of the wall. It may be the volume
changes of concrete that causes expansion due to rise in temperature. Concrete expands with increasing
temperature and contracts with decreasing temperature.
