Swiss Army Airlifts Water to Cows Facing

Drought, Hot Weather

In Mainz, Germany on July 22nd, a group of army helicopters reached an amount of 24,000 gallons of
water to about 20,000 cows. At a rate of 22-33 gallons per day, the helicopters have been airlifting
water to the parched cows for 667-1000 days all across southern Switzerland . "Due to the small
amounts of rain over the course of four to five weeks, the water levels in our rivers and our
groundwater have decreased significantly," said army spokesman Urs Mueller. To make sure this
doesn’t happen for a long time, 60 soldier were deployed to install 6 water tanks in the region. The
water has been taken from a nearby lake to be stored in the water tanks, 2 of which are connected to
pipes that are used to refill the tanks. Surprisingly this was a government funded errand and isn’t new
to the military with another incident like this one in 2003.

This type of mission ensures that cows won’t die due to dehydration because of droughts and that
they can live healthily. This relates to “Growth and diffusion of industrialization – changing the role of
energy and technology,” the dissemination of water to the cows throughout southern Switzerland.
And “Industrialization and Development,” the industrialization of water tanks in the Swiss country and
mountains for agriculture.
