LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS (GRADE 10)

Section: Grade 10 SSC-Leibniz
Date: March 12, 2019

I. OBJECTIVE
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a) derive the formula for percentile rank;
b) identify the steps in solving percentile rank of grouped data ;
c) participate actively in the discussion.; and
d) solve problems involving percentile rank of grouped data.
II. LESSON CONTENT
Topic: Measures of Position- Quartile of grouped data
Code: M10SP-IVa-2
Reference: Mathematics Grade 10 Learners Module by Melvin M. Callanta et. al., pp.
392-397
Materials: Laptop and LED TV
Values Integration: Education and Social Science
III. LEARNING EXPERIENCE
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’S ACTIVITY

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Daily Routines
a. Greetings
b. Prayer
c. Checking of Attendance

2. Review

“Before we start our lesson for “Sir; It’s all about Percentiles of Grouped
today, let us first review our data”
past topic yesterday. What have
we studied yesterday?”

“Very Good! So what is “Percentiles are the 99 scores that divides

percentiles?” the distribution into 100 equal parts”

“Excellent!”

“Okay! So what is the 30th “31.55 sir“

percentile of the following data”

Scores Frequency
49 - 55 4
42 - 48 8
35 - 41 10
27 - 34 9
21 - 26 4
“Very Good! It seems that you
learn a lot from our previous
topic”

3. Motivation

“Before we go to our next topic, “Yes sir, we want to watch a video clip”
let us first watch a presentation.
Do you want to watch a video?”

(The teacher will make the (The students shall watch attentively)
students watch a presentaion
about a students who is unsure
if he would be in the top 10 of
the graduating class)

“Did you enjoy the “Yes sir”

presentation?”

“So who is the main character “The main character character in the
in the presentation?” presentation is Badang.”

“Very Good! So What is “He is from Grade 10 SSC Leibniz”

Badang’s Grade and Section?”

“Excellent”

“So what is Badang’s “He is smart, respectful, humble,

Characteristic?” cooperative, alert and willing to learn”

B. Presentation of the lesson

“Based on the video that you have “He is unsure if he would be in the top 10 in
watched, What is Badang’s problem?” his class”

“So Badang is not sure whether he “Of course sir.”

would be glad or not with his score, So
my question is ‘Are you a responsible
students?”

“So since we are all responsible

citizens, we will help Badang to know
if he should be glad or not with his
score.”

“So literally, his problem will be our

problem because the answer on his
problem will be our topic for today”

C. Development of the Lesson

“Badang’s problem is all about

percentile rank”

“But can we solve his problem without “No sir, we can’t solve his problem if we
knowing what percentile rank is?” don’t know what is percentile rank”
(The teacher will flash the meaning of
percentile in the LED TV)

“So the meaning of the percentile rank “Percentile rank is typically define as the
is …; Everybody, read.” proportion of scores in a distribution that a
specific group is greater than or equal to.”

“So percentile rank is a proportion or a

percentage or a part in the lower side of
an specific score or group in the
distribution”

“For example: If Mia got a percentile “It implies that she performed better or just
rank of 90% in a quiz then what does it equal to 90% of the quizzers”
implies?”

“Correct! Should she be glad about her “Yes sir”

score”

“Why?” “Because he did better than the 90% of the

class”
“Very Good!”

“But you might ask. ‘Sir, but what is “Yes sir”

the use of the percentile rank?’.”

(The teacher will flash the use of

percentile in the LED TV)

“So the use of percentile rank is…; “Percentile ranks are particularly useful in
Everybody, read.” relating individual scores to their position in
the entire group”

“Okay so it is useful in determining the

position or rank of an individual in the
specific group”

“Who among you here has already got (Students raises their hand)
their ENCAE result?”
“Okay! Bring out your ENCAE result.”

“As you can see, there are percentile “These numbers are our percentile rank
ranks in your ENCAE result. So what is among all the students who took the ENCAE
the meaning of those numbers ” last year”

“Very Good! So ENCAE could be used

not only in ENCAE but also in
Economics, Politics etc.”

“Since we know now the meaning and “Yes sir. We are very excited to solve.”
use of percentile rank then shall we
proceed to the computation of the
percentile rank?”

“So the formula for getting the

percentile class is…”

(The teacher will flash the formula for

percentiles in the LED TV)

“What do you notice about the “It is somehow similar with the formula for
formula” Percentiles”

“Very good!”

“Any questions? Recommendations? “None sir”

Violent Reactions?”

“Since there are no questions, let us

now proceed to our example number
one”

(The teacher will flash a problem in the

LED TV)
“Okay, everybody read the problem.” “Assume that a researcher wanted to know
the percentage of consultants who made Php
5,400 or more per day”

(The teacher will slowly flash and (The students will ask questions and will
explain the solution.) listen attentively.)

“So what does that 55% mean?” “It means that 55% of consultants make
Php 5,400.00 or less per day and 45% of
consultants make Php 5,400.00 or more per
day. “

“Is there any questions?” “None sir.”

“Okay! Another example…”

“Okay, everybody read the problem.” “Assume that a researcher wanted to know
the percentage of consultants who made Php
5,400 or more per day”

“Who wants to solve the problem?” (Students raises their hand)

“Okay, _________.” (The student will solve the problem in front)

“Okay, explain your answer.” (The student will explain his answer)

“Then what does it mean?” “It means that 19% of consultants make
Php 3,140.00 or less per day and 81% of
consultants make Php 3,140.00 or more per
day”

“Very Good.”

D. Fixing Skills

“Do you want to know your percentile “Yes sir.”

rank in your third quarterly
examination?”
(The teacher will flash the scores of the
students in their third quarter
examination.)

“Okay class; For 15 minutes, Find the “Okay sir.”

percentile rank of the students next to
you.”

(The teacher will facilitate the activity (The students will find the percentile rank of
and tend to the questions of the the student next to them.)
students, if there are any.)

“Okay time’s up. Pass your papers.” (The students will pass their work.)

“Have you enjoyed finding the “Definitely sir”

percentile rank of your classmate?”

“So I will draw two papers and the “All right sir”
lucky owner of those papers will
discuss their work here in front.”

(The teacher will draw a student paper.) (The student shall discuss his/her work in
front.)

“Very Good.”

(The teacher will draw a student paper.) (The student shall discuss his/her work in
front.)

“Excellent.”

E. Generalization
“So any questions about our topic?” “None sir.”

“So what is percentile rank?” “Percentile rank is typically define as the

proportion of scores in a distribution that a
specific group is greater than or equal to.”

“All right! So what is the use of “Percentile ranks are particularly useful in
percentile rank?” relating individual scores to their position in
the entire group. It is used in NCAE,
politics, economics etc.”

“What is the formula for percentile ( P−LB ) f p

rank?” “PR = ( )[
100
N i ]
+cf ❑b ”

“So, What do you think, will Badang be

“Yes sir, because Badang’s percentile rank is
in in the top ten or not?”
90% while he only needs a percentile rank 0f
88% to be in the top ten.”
“Very Good”

“Okay SSC Leibniz, Give yourself a

(Clappings)
warm round of applause.”
IV. EVALUATION
