2016 and newer International ProStar Engine Data

Beginning in 2016 International Navistar switched to a new green 9-pin diagnostic plug which is not
compatible with the standard PeopleNet 9-pin. The instructions below offer three possible connection
points for these vehicles using the PeopleNet 2-pin Backbone connection.
Not all options are available on all vehicles, so we recommend starting at the top and working down until
you find a solution that suits your trucks.
Use of these methods on vehicles prior to 2016 is NOT recommended, as those vehicles may still require
the J1708 data as well as the J1939. Continue to use a 9-pin diagnostic connector for vehicles before
model year 2016.

OPTION 1
Backbone Connection below the Fuse Panel

Remove the dash panel to the lower right of the fuse panel. Look around the top of that space for the
J1939 backbone connector shown below. This connector does not come with all vehicles, but if it is
present connect the PeopleNet Male and Female 2-pin J1939 connectors using the pigtail connectors
labeled “INT’L, NAVISTAR”.
OPTION 2
J1939 Splice Block

Remove the dash storage compartment above the air brake releases and locate the J1939 splice block
shown below (moved out of its native position for the photo). Check the back of the connector to verify
there are open positions on both the Yellow and Green rows. If so, connect the PeopleNet J1939 using
the male “INT’L, NAVISTAR” pigtail as shown below.
1. Remove the brown pin cover and the gray pin lock from the Vehicle Splice Block.

2. Remove the lock cover from the male “INT’L, NAVISTAR” pigtail and withdraw the yellow and
green wires and pins.
3. Insert the green and yellow pigtail leads into their respective rows on the vehicle Splice Block.
Replace the gray lock and the brown cap on the Splice Block, and connect the PeopleNet J1939
male connector to the female pigtail. The PeopleNet J1939 Female connector will not be used
and can be tied out of the way.
OPTION 3
Backbone Connection on the Transmission

Look for the vehicle J1939 Backbone connection on the vehicle transmission. This will be in one of the
two locations shown below.
Connect the PeopleNet 2-pin Male and Female backbone connectors to the available position using the
“INT’L, NAVISTAR” pigtail connections.
