Listening

Class 10 & 11
We need to expand the traditional
definition of listening as the receiving and
processing of auditory signals.

What is
Listening? Because it can take place by both ears and
eyes.

So, listening now be defined as the process


of receiving, understanding, remembering,
evaluating and responding verbal and
nonverbal message.

• Physical problem and inability
• Multitasking
• Mental distractions: Lack of focus
2. Biases and Prejudices
• In bias and prejudices, you hear what the speaker is saying through
stereotypes.
• Hearing a person differently because of his or her race, affectional
orientation, age or gender.

• For example: you dismiss a valid argument and accept an invalid point
because of race, gender and orientation.
3. Lack of Appropriate Focus
• Focusing on irrelevant issues
• Misplaced focus (Responding while the speaker is still speaking)
4. Premature Judgement
• Assuming that you know what, the speaker is going to speak.

Polite Listening

• It shows that you care more about


what they may be communicating.
• When listening politely, you should
not interrupt the speaker
• Acknowledge what they are saying
• Maintain eye contact
• Avoid interrupting the speaker
• Give supportive listening cues
• Show empathy
• Give positive feedback

Critical Listening

• Recognize own biases


• Keep an open mind

Listening Differences: Culture & Gender
• Listening will be different because of the inevitable differences in the
communication system between speaker and listener.
There are THREE cultural influences on listening, are---
A) Language and speech
B) Nonverbal Behaviors
C) Feedback (differences in USA and Japan)
