Founder's Views
on the shape of things to come
A long and very eventful journey has seen TCS grow into
its present dynamic manifestation that defines its ambitions
and parameters in terms of the limitless global village.
CONNECT caught up with the Chairman of TRANZUM
long distance via the Internet, and gained an insight for its
readership on the thinking that has gone into this reinvention
of the business.
INFOTHON
CONNECT: What were the strategic considerations that
led to the name TRANZUM?
Khalid N. Awan: As we evolve into a multi-services group
trading globally, we needed a common identity and a name.
C: How do you envision TRANZUM adding value to the
existing business units?
KNA: Firstly a common identity would demonstrate
relationship between various entities comprising the Group,
who now have a family name. Customers would thus
become aware of Group's overall capabilities. Internally it
enables the TRANZUM Group to centralize core
management functions such as Information Technology

Support, Human Resource, and Marketing Services.
C: Given its very high brand recognition developed
over the last 23 years, TCS will remain the prime
identification of TRANZUM in the foreseeable future.
Why did you not leverage an existing strength and
establish the TCS GROUP instead of opting for a brand
new name that will require considerable investment
before its brand value can be developed?
KNA: Yes, TCS is a strong brand in this market, and would
therefore remain our flagship company in Pakistan. However,
when trading globally in services other than courier and
logistics, we needed to have names and distinct identities
for our new services. This is necessary not only for marketing
purposes but also for each company to have its separate
focus and customer orientation, a case in point: the needs
of a courier services customer are different from the needs
of a travel services customer. Accordingly staff training and
procedures have to be different.
We have thus organized ourselves as follows: TCS providing
courier and logistics services; FLYING WAREHOUSE -
customized airfreight solutions; ROAD TRANSPORT -
warehousing and distribution; SENTIMENTS EXPRESS -
Gifts, Greetings and mail-order services; INTIANA - Travel
and Tours; OCTARA - Training, Events and Publications;
INFOTHON - web based e-commerce services.
Born as separate business units within TCS, three of the
above have so far matured into independent companies,
and these companies, either through our own entities or
global alliances, are capable of serving customers anywhere
in the world.
Some of our customers in Pakistan have already
experienced the benefits of this global reach and
resourcefulness. For example, the Management Association
of Pakistan (MAP) Convention organized by OCTARA is a
world-class event surpassing previous standards in terms
of speakers and sponsorships. Drawing upon our
resourcefulness and experience gained in organizing similar
events abroad, OCTARA has attracted world-class speakers
and sponsors like CNN and Boeing - for the first time in
Pakistan. Likewise customers in developed markets such
as North America have also experienced our unique
customizations. TCS earned an award recently from the
Lieutenant Governor of Ontario for providing an innovative
and cost-efficient delivery solution to the aboriginal
populations inhabiting the remote territories.
The reason for opting for a new name -TRANZUM, is that
we needed a name to define our group of companies, and
this name had to be pronounceable internationally,
compatible across cultures, not yet patented anywhere,
and most importantly, in today's global economy have a
dot.com domain available. Similarly all other names like
Intiana, Flying Warehouse, Octara, and Infothon had to
qualify these criteria. The naming exercise was therefore

We are bringing out this Spring 2006 issue
of CONNECT at a critical juncture in the
development of one of our nascent
enterprises. Octara has developed very
quickly indeed, and it has as much to do
with the dynamism of the team that is
heading Octara, as with a period in our
corporate lives where human resource
development has been flagged across the board as a key area
in the acquisition of competitive advantage. As event managers
of the 10th Management Convention 2006, Octara has staked
its rising reputation to delivering a 'WOW!' experience to its
highly valued client, the Management Association of Pakistan.
I sincerely wish Hamza Hashmi and his team top-notch success
in the conduct of this very prestigious three days event that
has seen confirmations from a very distinguished panel of
speakers indeed.
It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to see the cherished
ambition of our Chairman find practical expression in the shape
of the TRANZUM Group that will fine tune and promote globally
the seven businesses under its care. A great deal of time and
an extensive process in which the core management team was
deeply involved. As for question why we did not adopt the name
TCS Group, this is because TCS is now one of the companies
in the group. It is our pride and a strong name, the eldest sibling
in the TRANZUM family. In the course of time it is our hope that
the new entities will become equally famous.
C: A question on a few minds is whether TCS Courier is
being primed for a merger with an existing international
operator?
KNA: TCS has come of age as a world-class company in its
own right. For nearly quarter of a century it has delivered quality
that has earned brand recognition and a market share that is
the envy of any international operator looking at Pakistan. Hence
we have had offers, and this is normal in business. However,
at this time our entire focus is to develop TCS even further as
exciting opportunities beckon us.
C: What is you vision for Tranzum?
KNA: To be a multiple services provider leveraging the power
of e-commerce globally.
Arie De Geus, Professor at London Business School & former
executive for Royal Dutch Shell, has said that enduring
organizations are "...financially conservative; their leaders are
outward looking; they have a strong value system; they all have
a very tolerant management style; and, critically, they do not
define themselves by the nature of their assets, instead in terms
of their human community." He could very well have been
speaking about TCS and the new TRANZUM Group.

energy has been expended upon the emergence of this
progressive master enterprise offering services in diversified
industries as we evolve into a multi-services group trading
globally. All that now remains is for all our colleagues to redouble
their effort and accept no limits on how far we can go both as
individual enterprises, and collectively as TRANZUM.
This issue we are truly privileged to carry within our pages the
profiles of two ladies who have done Pakistan proud. Arfa
Karim, at the tender age of 10, has notched up some amazing
accomplishments, and been invited for a one-on-one with the
right honorable Bill Gates. Samina Rizwan is heading up the
regional operations of Oracle, and is a formidable force at work
for Pakistan. TCS youth trainer Sidra Iqbal has shown the flag
at the World Youth Congress, and has filed a most stimulating
report.
There is a whole lot more in this issue of CONNECT that I

Whenever the concept of a group of companies
is brought into a business, the business tends
to grow in all directions and at times at
exponential rates. This piece of corporate
wisdom comes from the latest entrant to the
TCS human capital bank, Mr. Khalid Dar, Senior
Manager Call Center. Khalid Dar's seen a fair
bit of the world so he probably knows what he
is talking about, particularly in reference to
TRANZUM. Now growing in all directions and
at times at exponential rates appears to be all
good, provided the action stations are manned
by cadres that relish the act of pulling 'Gs', and
just as quickly settling into consolidating the
gains made. Flat-out gallops need to be
interspersed with steady canters, or even the
occasional trot, to help the mount recuperate
and remain battle-worthy for the long haul.
Burnout is a clear and present danger when
taking on the world, and one must bear in mind
that Rome was not built in a day, and that
perseverance is the key to success. On that
thought provoking note, here's wishing
TRANZUM a glorious future.

Coexistence of
Civilisations
The Khaleej Times International Forum brought together the
British parliamentarians Lord Merlin Hay, Lord Nazir Ahmed and Lady Olga Maitland with
cream of the East and West to discuss "Muslim World and Mohammad A. R. Galadari share a light moment
the West: Coexistence of Civilizations." Heads of Government,
Consuls and prominent businessmen attended the event that
cleared many misconceptions between the two civilizations.
It was the third discussion hosted by the Khaleej Times, and
attended as panelists by Lord Merlin Victor Hay who is the
Earl of Errol and Lord High Constable of Scotland and a
member of the British House of Lords. Also on the panel was
Lord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham, a Muslim Asian Member
of the British House of Lords and a leading voice in the 'Inter-
faith Inter-religious Dialogue Group' in British Parliament.
The third panelist was Lady Olga Maitland, president of the
Defence Strategic Forum and a former Member of the British

A balance of perspective is lacking in the way both the West member of Parliament UK and MP, UK

Maitland's view. "You have a West that is fabulously rich and
strong, whereas the Muslim society by and large lives under
miserable conditions of poverty and dispossession," she said.
"The Muslims do not hate the West. What they hate is,
however, certain policies of some Western countries." The
need of the hour, according to Lord Merlin Victor Hay, is to
understand that the ethical core of all cultures is one, beneath
the external differences that keep them apart. Lord Nazir
Ahmed was blunt in his analysis of Western attitudes that he
said smacked of double standards. The consensus that
emerged from the highly stimulating discourse was that
Lord Nazir Ahmed goes on the front foot Val Thomas and Jemma Nicholls
dialogue alone is the way forward for cultures and civilizations - seeking an enlightened path

Colonel in the Armoured Corps, who has just returned
from a tour of duty with UN Peacekeepers in the Congo.
Her mother Samina has a Masters in Economics that she
puts to good use running the family farm in Faisalabad.
Arfa's accomplishment is "very impressive," said Michael
Earls, 33, a software consultant and Microsoft Certified
Solution Developer in Atlanta. "The type of thinking that
goes into correctly answering those questions is pretty
mature. ... Microsoft certifications are not a joke -- they're
highly respected in the industry."
Maths and Physics are Arfa’s favourite subjects, and Enid
Blyton’s ‘Secret Seven’ and ‘Famous Five’ her favourite
books, although her present read is Louis Fitzbez’s ‘Harriet
The Spy’. Arfa has two younger brothers, Daud (4) and
Samad (8), and her current best friend is Hira.
At the International Women’s Conference in Multan’s
Bahauddin Zakriya University recently Arfa read a paper
to the great appreciation of the 2000 plus delegates. She
also inaugurated a computer lab at Karachi’s Sindh
Madressa, donated by financiers Khanani & Kalia, and got
a commitment from them to donate one to a school in her
hometown of Faisalabad as well. These now are the not-
so-simple pleasures of a Pakistani pre-teen growing up.
So how does she handle all this attention? Her philosophy
has the earthy simplicity of youth. “Shyness is in the mind,”
she says. “If you feel shy, you will be shy. If you feel
confident then you will be confident.” Clearly she is relishing
her celebrity status. Great going girl!

Sidra Iqbal, celebrity trainer in public
speaking for the TCS Hyde Park
Juniors (HPJ) Program was fortunate
to be one of the 700 participants
selected out of 4000 applicants, and
win a travel scholarship to Scotland
to attend this esteemed event. As a
youth delegate of Pakistan, and as
the chosen spokesperson for the
region of Asia (amongst 400 Asian
delegates), she feels that youth-led development is perhaps one
of the most effective tools in reaching the global aims of
international prosperity and peaceful coexistence.
At the Congress Sidra was truly in the thick of things, conducting
a mentoring workshop ‘Spread Your Wings and Fly’; discussing
and drafting the Congress policy document with groups of diverse
nationalities and backgrounds; refurbishing an apartment for the
homeless with her clan as the Action Project; and the numerous
informal late-night-over-a-pizza talks.
“It is not the battles that we have lost along the way that haunt
us the most,” says Sidra. “But those we never mustered the
courage to fight. It is not when idealism fails that we are most
disappointed, but when it is surrendered without a struggle. At
conventions, such as the 3rd Youth Congress 2005, where you
meet tens of zealous young delegates trying to contribute to
uphold their pledges and promises, one realizes that yes a better
tomorrow is possible.” Indeed! Sidra has joined ARY Television
as Product Development Manager for the entire Network spread
over 12 channels, in addition to being inducted as Trainer for
the ‘Women As Global Leaders’ Conference organized by the
UAE Ministry of Education and scheduled for March 2006.

early bomber pilots of the PAF, a
decorated soldier and a successful
military diplomat. Her husband, the late
Air Cdre Rizwanullah Khan, was a gifted
and versatile officer - a sword of honour
winner, a best pilots trophy winner, a
gold medallist in aerospace engineering,
besides being an F-16 combat pilot.
“Rizwan taught me the difference
between a good professional and an
exceptional one.”
The first real learning Samina says she
ever did was when she joined the
Convent of Jesus and Mary in Murree,
and came under the tutelage of Sister
Mary Andrew. “Forever am I grateful to
Sister Andrew for the values that she
instilled in me; love of literature, respect
for all religions, appreciating friends and
making an effort to build character.”
Samina moved to Washington DC right
after her 'O' levels. Her father was
Defence Attache with the Pakistan
Embassy and did not have enough
money to put her through college. So
she earned and learned her way. “It
taught me a lot about independence, the
value of money, and my own ability to

drive myself to intense levels of hard
work. I acquired my present work ethics
during those years when I paid my way
through university in USA.” She
graduated from The American University
in Washington DC with a bachelors’
degree in Information Systems
Management.
Samina Rizwan is a Trustee of Rizwan
Scholars, a not-for-profit tertiary
education project which grants
scholarships for higher education to
academically brilliant but economically
challenged young Pakistanis. Samina is
a Certified PMP (Project Management
Professional) with the Project
Management Institute of USA and is the
first Pakistani woman to achieve this
certification.
On Pakistan’s image issue Samina says
that generally speaking it is sadly true
today that being Pakistani in the
international business community does
indeed pose some challenges. “I am not
sure if people realize how difficult it has
become. I know that my colleagues at
Oracle have learnt to respect and
appreciate Pakistan because of me. It
is my humble contribution to building the
image of my country.”
On the professional front by the time
Samina took over Oracle about four
years ago, its technology was already
the defacto standard for database and
it was being used by over 400
licensed customers. A very serious issue
was addressing the matter of unlicensed
usage of Oracle products by
organizations. “ Currently, the good news
is that the market understands the
strength of Oracle well. We have 600

customers in terms of database usage,
and even our competition in the business
applications space uses our database
technology to enhance its software's
performance. These are exciting times
for Oracle in Pakistan.”
Reading has been her life's joy. Some
durable favourites have been
Shakespeare's tragedies, Far from the
Madding Crowd by Hardy, Jinnah of
Pakistan by Stanley Wolpert, and her
latest favourite The God of Small Things
by Arundhati Roy. She never tires of
watching Peter Sellers' The Party. “I'm
sure very few beat Peter Sellers, but
there's also Shahrukh Khan. It is
impossible not to adore him.” Samina
loves eastern attire. “Whether its shalwar
qameez, saris, kurta pyjamas - it doesn’t
matter - the more ethnic the better.”

On the issue of female empowerment
Samina is brief and to the point. “First,
it will take educating the Pakistani man.
Then, it will take a lot of courage from
the Pakistani woman to demand dignity
and value for her being from her family
and her community.”

During the period under review the Trainers Resource Group
met for its 112th Session with Ms. Masooma Kachelo, Senior
Training Consultant speaking on 'NLP -The Psychology of
Success: An Internal Dialogue.' Have you ever wondered, she
posed, how does a man with no hands and no feet become
a marathon runner clocking over 30,000 miles, while the King
of Rock & Roll dies alone from a drug over dose in his bath
tub? How does a man lift a metal pole weighing thousands of
pounds to save a child trapped under it, but when asked to do
it with no child to rescue can't even shake it? How does a man
who works in the mailroom of a company become its CEO,
while the MBA graduate struggles to get promoted?

During the period under review Octara moved into high gear spinning off seven
Workshops, one of which on 'Time Management' lasted a whole three days!
Conducted in Lahore by Suleman Ahmer, the founder of Timelenders. He is an
Engineering graduate of the University of Nebraska (USA), and his research with
the US Air Force in Solid State Physics culminated in published work. The essence
of his travel experiences is captured in 'The Embattled Innocence' published in

Then came Rose-marie Fernandez, the Canadian Certified Human Resource
Practitioner. She has by now made it a habit to do things in twos, and this time
it was no different with Workshops on 'Improving the Fit' and 'Your Secretary, A
Crucial Asset'. Both drew considerable attention from corporate ladies holding
the fort, and increasingly known as the boss's boss.
'Managing for Tomorrow' was next, facilitated by Shaikh Ghazi who is based in
Dubai, and acclaimed as a result-oriented individual with excellent coalition
building skills, and imparting training with the goal of changing mindsets.
The fifth Octara Workshop was with Hassan Rizwan on the subject of 'Public
Speaking at Work'. Hassan is a graduate of Behavioral Sciences from the US Air
Force Academy, and has won a number of national and international declamation
competitions.
Sandra Reeves (FCMC, Med) was back in Pakistan with 'Creativity and Innovation
for Business', a Tony Buzan Thinking and Mindmapping Centre (UK) certified
one-day Workshop. Sandra has been listed in the International Who's Who
Directory since 1997, and is the author of an acclaimed guidebook 'Getting Ahead
in your Career.'
Octara engaged with Rahid Sami on an issue of high importance, 'Managing
Upset Customers Constructively, and Learning from Service Breakdowns'. Rahid
is an experienced motivational speaker specializing in sales and service quality.
In between Workshops Octara helped put together the 3rd Excellence Awards
and Charter Award Ceremony of the Chartered Financial Analysts Association
of Pakistan (CFAAP), graced by Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, Governor State Bank of
Pakistan, as the Chief Guest, and Dr. Jan Ray Squires, Managing Director Asia
Pacific, CFA Institute, as the Keynote Speaker.

motivation, and enrichment. At present, she is working as a
Senior Consultant at Sensei International Karachi.

servicing key players in the financial, telecommunication, retail
and tobacco industries.
After moving back to Pakistan in 2002, he started an offshore
Call Center CC Works servicing North American clients from
Karachi. He commenced his professional career as a Customer
Service Representative in 1996 at Sprint PCS, one of the
largest cell phone providers in the United States of America,
while still completing his Bachelors. A results- oriented
professional, Khalid has over eight years in the Customer
Services and Call Center industries, with five years in managerial
heading up to four hundred seats establishments.
Khalid's work philosophy incorporates the proper balance of
people, processes, and Technologies to improve employee
productivity and achieve high client service Levels. Regarding
the emergence of the TRANZUM Group, Khalid says that from
His experiences in the past he knows for a fact that whenever
the concept of a group of companies is brought into a business,
the business tends to grow in all directions and at times at
exponential rates.
Khalid has two sisters and one younger brother. Arabic and
Mediterranean Cuisine are on the top of his food list. He is an

is John Grisham's 'The Client'. His favorite movie is Al Pacino's

Jamil is blessed with three sons & two

comprises Dawn, Khaleej Times, Times
and Newsweek. On the subject of food
Jamil says that his wife is a very good

DARTing To Pakistan’s Aid

Canadian Forces ‘Disaster
Assistance Response Team’
(CF-DART)
The Canadian Government has consistently demonstrated
strong support for humanitarian assistance and disaster-
relief operations throughout the world. Following the
Earthquake the CF-DART Task Force Pakistan (TFP) set
up camp at Garhi Dupatta, 20 kilometers southeast of
Muzafarabad with a Medical Clinic and a Reverse osmosis
Water Purification Unit (ROWPU). The CF-DART TPF has
three ROWPUs in Muzafarabad.
The origins of CF-DART go back to 1994 when the CF
deployed 2 Field Ambulances to Rwanda. Despite the best
efforts of all concerned, the relief effort after the peak of
the Cholera epidemic that brought great suffering. This
experience convinced the Canadian Government of the
need to create a rapid response capability to provide
effective humanitarian aid. The concept of the CF-DART
was born. The DART is a military organization designed
to deploy rapidly anywhere in the world to crisis ranging
from natural disasters to complex humanitarian
emergencies. It works in conjunction with national and
regional governments and non-governmental agencies to
stabilize the primary effects of emergencies; provide purified
drinking water and medical aid to prevent the rapid onset
of the secondary effects of the disaster; and gains time
for the deployment of national and international
humanitarian aid to facilitate long term recovery in a disaster
stricken community.
CF-DART has operated in Haiti, Honduras, Turkey, Sri
Lanka, and now Pakistan. It comprises 200 CF personnel
ready to deploy for up to 40 days in permissive
environments where it will not encounter any organized
resistance or threat. It can be activated by a request from
an individual country or the UN, and requires permission
from the Canadian Government. CF-DART serves the four
critical needs of primary medical care, production of safe
drinking water, a limited specialist engineering capability,
and a command and control structure that allows for
effective communications with the host nation and the
other agencies involved in the relief effort. CF-DART
comprises of Headquarters (45 personnel) for strategic
level liaison; Logistics Platoon (20 personnel) for transport
and supplies; Engineer Troop (37 personnel) for bulk and
bagged water, and limited construction; Medical Platoon
(40 personnel) for tented facility catering to 250 out-patients
and 10 in-patients per day. A Defence and Security Platoon
(45 personnel) provide camp security and general support.
CF-DART is not designed to conduct search and rescue
operations.
