3. AN ENCOUNTER IN THE WOODS

Lesson [Summary]
An Encounter in the Woods is a realistic wild animals fiction by
author Ernest Thompson Seton depicting how clever, kind and brave
animals can be.
It is a story about Mother Partridge who was taking her brood down
a hill to a small stream. The story draws attention to Mother
Partridge’s encounter with a powerful fox and the heroism, wisdom,
defense strategies adopted by her to play a trick on the fox to save
her baby birds from the deadly fox.
Mother Partridge was able to divert the fox’s attention away from the
baby birds by compelling him to race the mother bird. The Partridge
surprised the fox completely. He realized that the Partridge had made
a fool of him.
At the end, Mother Partridge flew high leaving the fox empty handed
and reunited with her babies. This story teaches that even a tiny and
feeble creature can rescue oneself by one’s own wit and wisdom.

B. Answer in detail.

Q1. Describe the baby partridges. How do you know that they were
obedient?
Ans. The baby partridges were one-day-old. They could already walk
quickly. They looked like little balls of fur. They toddled on tiny pink
legs and peeped softly and sadly if left behind. They looked very
fragile. They were also very obedient because they listened to their
mother as soon as she told them to hide and they did not move from
their hiding places till she asked them to come to her.

Q2. How did the mother partridge race the fox?

Ans. Mother Partridge flew towards the fox. She came down bravely
and then threw herself on the ground. She moved as if she was lame
and made a sound as if she was hurt. The fox turned and tried to
catch her, but could not. She always moved so that something like a
small plant or a log came between them. No matter how fast the fox
ran or jumped, she always managed to move out of his reach.

Q6. What happened when the mother partridge came back

Ans. When the mother partridge came back, she saw that all her
babies were hiding. They had not moved even when they heard her
step. When she called to them to come, only then did all the baby
birds come out of their hiding places. The baby on the chip opened
his eyes and ran to hide under her tail. All the other babies joined
them.
