The document is a physics assignment on sound that contains 3 questions.
[1] The first question asks about the distance a sound travels and time taken. It is determined that a sound travels 495m in 1.5 seconds, and the total distance for an echo is 1485m with a time of 4.5 seconds.
[2] The second question asks about characteristics of sound as amplitude decreases. The loudness decreases as amplitude decreases, while frequency and wavelength remain the same. It is calculated that it takes 0.04 seconds for the amplitude to half over 13 oscillations.
[3] The third question asks about an echo from a mountainside. The first sound is louder as the second loses

GRADE 12 B PHYSICS ASSIGNMENT TWO SOLUTIONS OF TERM ONE 2019
TOPIC: SOUND 1. (a) (i) He hear one sound. (ii) d=V × t , V =330 m/s ,t=1.5 s , d ? d=330 m/ s ×1.5 s d = 495m (b) (i) She hears two sounds, first one being a direct sound from the hammer and the second one an echo, a reflected sound. (ii) The girl hears the first sound at 1.5 seconds. The girl hears the second sound at 4.5 seconds. Since sound travels from the workman to the cliff, back to the workman and then to the girl. The total distance travelled by sound comes to 3 × 495 m = 1485 m. d Therefore, t= , d=1485 m ,V =330 m/s , t ? V 1485 m t= 330 m/s t = 4.5 s. You can also find this time by multiplying 1.5 s by 3 i.e 1.5 s × 3 = 4.5 s.
2. (a) (i) The loudness of the sound is decreasing.
(ii) This is because the amplitude is decreasing. (b) (i) The frequency of the sound is the same or it is not changing. (ii) The wavelength is the same throughout the wave motion. (c) (i) 13 oscillations. (ii) 1. Frequency is the number of complete waves produced per second. 1 2. T = , f =300 Hz f 1 T= 300 Hz T = 0.003 seconds or 3 × 10-3 seconds. 3. Since one cycle takes 0.003 seconds and it takes 13 cycles for the amplitude to half, we multiply 0.003 seconds to get 0.04 seconds. (d) (i) yes. (ii) Yes. (iii) No. 3. (a) The boys hears two sounds, the first one being the sound directly from the bell and the second one being an echo from the steep mountainside. (b) The first sound is louder than the second sound because the second sound loses energy to the mountainside as it is reflected. d (c) (i) t= , d=990 m, v=330m/ s , t ? V 990 m t= 330 m/s t = 3 seconds. (ii) The second sound travels the total distance of 3 × 990m = 2970m. 2970 m t= 330 m/s t=9 seconds. (iii) Time interval or the time which passes between the two sounds is given by subtracting 3 seconds from 9 seconds to get 6 seconds.
